Job Description

At FNB, a recognised leader in South Africa's financial services sector, an exciting opportunity exists for a skilled Transactor to join their dynamic team in Johannesburg. This role is for an individual who thrives on understanding complex financial landscapes and developing innovative debt and trade solutions for clients. FNB prides itself on a culture that blends traditional values with forward-thinking innovation, fostering an environment where ambitious professionals can forge their own career paths and contribute to meaningful impact. As a preferred employer, FNB offers a platform for collective intelligence, unlocking unique possibilities for both clients and society at large.

About the Role

The Transactor position within FNB is central to identifying and capitalising on opportunities within the debt and trade finance space. This involves a deep dive into market dynamics, understanding global trends, and analysing competitor strategies to pinpoint sector-wide challenges and potential growth areas. Crucially, the role requires an astute comprehension of the micro-environment, dissecting client-specific performance, financial data, debt structures, and projected cash flows. This granular analysis is essential for crafting bespoke funding solutions, which could encompass offshore opportunities, acquisition financing, and empowerment financing initiatives. Building and maintaining robust client relationships is paramount, requiring a proactive approach to understanding their evolving needs, lending behaviours, and perceptions. This engagement facilitates targeted origination planning and supports strategic partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of a Transactor are multifaceted and demand a blend of analytical rigour and client-centric engagement. Key duties include:

  • **Market and Sector Analysis:** Conducting comprehensive research into key competitors, global economic trends, specific industry dynamics, and broader macro-environmental forces to identify emerging opportunities and potential challenges within product and sector portfolios.
  • **Client Financial Assessment:** Analysing critical micro-environmental factors such as client performance trends, financial statements, existing debt profiles, gearing ratios, and projected cash flows to inform the structuring of differentiated funding solutions.
  • **Solution Development:** Developing and proposing tailored debt and trade finance solutions that align with client requirements, regulatory frameworks, and internal risk appetites. This may include exploring options for offshore financing, mergers and acquisitions support, and financing for empowerment initiatives.
  • **Client Relationship Management:** Cultivating strong relationships with clients by understanding their business needs, financial objectives, and lending behaviours to ensure successful deal support and ongoing enablement.
  • **Origination and Planning:** Undertaking research to inform targeted origination strategies for prospective clients and strategic partners.
  • **Deal Monitoring:** Actively participating in the ongoing monitoring of existing deals, which may involve identifying and addressing covenant breaches or late payment situations.

What They're Looking For

FNB is seeking an individual with a minimum of five years of relevant experience, ideally gained in product development or client coverage within the financial services industry. While a Chartered Accountant (CA(SA)) qualification is advantageous, it is not a strict requirement. The company is committed to Employment Equity and prefers candidates who align with these principles.

The ideal candidate will possess a curious and courageous mindset, driven by a desire to continuously learn and explore new avenues. They will demonstrate an obsession with mastery, understanding the dedication required to excel in their field and consistently striving for improvement. This role demands strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of financial markets, and exceptional interpersonal abilities to effectively engage with clients and internal stakeholders.

For South African applicants, roles like this at established financial institutions typically offer competitive remuneration packages, often complemented by performance-based bonuses and comprehensive benefits. Career progression can lead to senior deal origination, sector specialisation, or management roles within corporate and investment banking divisions.
