Job Description

Absa is currently inviting applications for a Business Intelligence Coverage Analyst to join their team in Sandton. This role serves as a vital link between the bank’s coverage bankers and the specialized resources and energy sectors. By providing deep-dive financial analysis and strategic client support, the successful candidate will play a significant role in managing high-value portfolios and driving revenue growth across the Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) division.

About the role

The primary objective of this position is to facilitate seamless collaboration across product teams, ensuring that Absa’s corporate and institutional clients receive integrated, high-impact banking solutions. You will be responsible for translating complex market data and financial information into actionable insights that empower senior bankers to make informed relationship-management decisions.

This is an analytical role that demands a high level of technical proficiency and a proactive approach to research. Working within the Resources and Energy space requires a candidate who can balance the rigour of financial modelling with the agility needed to support transactional deal-making. As an equal opportunity employer, Absa places a strong emphasis on transformation and encourages applications from candidates who contribute to the bank’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) goals.

Key Responsibilities

Your daily responsibilities will be diverse, blending desk-based analytical work with cross-functional project management. Key tasks include:

  • **Client Support:** Crafting professional pitch books, detailed account plans, and managing deal pipelines.
  • **Financial Modelling:** Developing and maintaining robust financial forecasts, performing risk assessments, and preparing detailed credit papers for approval committees.
  • **Deal Execution:** Assisting in the end-to-end execution of capital market transactions, lending, and advisory services, while liaising with internal stakeholders in Legal, Risk, and Treasury.
  • **Market Intelligence:** Staying ahead of the curve by monitoring macroeconomic trends and sector-specific developments, translating these into insightful reports for internal stakeholders.
  • **Compliance:** Ensuring all client engagements strictly adhere to internal risk frameworks, AML (Anti-Money Laundering), and KYC (Know Your Customer) regulations.

What they're looking for

Absa is seeking a detail-oriented professional with a strong academic foundation and a genuine interest in the energy and natural resources landscape. The ideal candidate should possess:

  • **Educational Background:** A post-graduate degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field.
  • **Professional Credentials:** A CA(SA) or CFA charter (or active enrolment toward these qualifications) is highly preferred and will distinguish your application.
  • **Experience:** Between 1 to 3 years of relevant professional experience, preferably within a banking, corporate finance, or investment environment.
  • **Analytical Rigour:** Advanced proficiency in financial statement analysis and the ability to build and interpret complex models.

For applicants looking to enter or progress within South African corporate banking, this role offers an excellent entry point into the "Front Office" side of CIB. Analysts in these departments typically navigate a clear career trajectory toward becoming Coverage Bankers or specialized Investment Banking Associates. Salaries for junior-to-mid-level analysts in Johannesburg’s financial hub are highly competitive, generally reflecting the specialist nature of the work. Candidates should highlight their ability to multitask under pressure and their commitment to regulatory excellence in their applications.
