Job Description

FNB is seeking a Senior Business Analyst to join its Global Markets Technology and Data division, specifically focusing on the Payments and Core platform for its broader African operations. This is a high-impact position situated at the intersection of complex financial technology and strategic expansion. The successful candidate will act as the vital link between internal business stakeholders and the technical teams tasked with executing payment processing, settlement operations, and various data-driven initiatives.

About the role

Operating within the dynamic environment of African banking, this role demands a professional who can navigate both the technical intricacies of payment systems and the broader business goals of a leading financial institution. You will be responsible for translating high-level business objectives into precise, scalable, and compliant functional requirements.

This position requires a deep understanding of the end-to-end payment architecture. Beyond simply documenting requirements, you will be expected to identify opportunities for standardisation and process optimisation across various African markets. You will serve as a bridge, ensuring that the technology delivered is not only functional but also aligned with long-term strategic growth and regulatory compliance. Success in this role is defined by your ability to manage expectations, negotiate with stakeholders, and facilitate collaboration between the bank and external vendors.

Key Responsibilities

  • **Stakeholder Engagement:** Facilitate workshops, lead meetings, and maintain clear lines of communication with project sponsors, business users, and technical teams to ensure project alignment.
  • **Requirements Management:** Develop detailed functional and business requirements, including process workflows and data specifications, adhering to BABOK standards.
  • **System Analysis:** Conduct thorough investigations into the payment system architecture, performing root cause analysis on production issues and identifying areas for system improvement.
  • **Project Governance:** Assist platform leads and project managers with feasibility studies, resource estimation, business case development, and the creation of regular project status reports.
  • **Solution Delivery:** Collaborate closely with vendors for incident resolution, coordinate testing efforts to ensure software meets specifications, and document all recommendations and evaluations.

What they're looking for

To be successful in this role, you must demonstrate expert-level knowledge of the payments domain. The bank is looking for a specialist who understands the lifecycle of cross-border payments and the regulatory frameworks governing them. Specifically, you will need:

  • **Core Technical Competencies:** Expert knowledge of SWIFT MT/FIN messaging, ISO20022 standards (including mapping processes), and SWIFT gpi services.
  • **Domain Expertise:** Understanding of payment market infrastructures such as CBPR and SADC RTGS (SIRESS), as well as experience with TIBCO integration services.
  • **Analytical Skillset:** A proven ability to perform data extraction and analysis, coupled with the "big picture" conceptual thinking needed to balance complex technological constraints with business requirements.
  • **Qualifications:** A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field is required.

For applicants in the South African market, this represents a senior-level opportunity within the banking sector. Business Analysts specialising in complex payment landscapes and cross-border financial systems in Johannesburg often command competitive remuneration packages that reflect the high level of technical proficiency required. Professionals in this field frequently follow career paths into Platform Lead, Product Owner, or Senior Programme Management roles. Given FNB’s footprint, experience in this role is highly transferable across the broader African financial services industry.
