Job Description
This is a high-impact strategic role within First National Bank (FNB) based in Johannesburg, focusing on the Retail segment’s customer value proposition (CVP). The position sits at the intersection of commercial strategy, product innovation, and customer experience, requiring a candidate who can translate complex data insights into tangible growth.
About the role
In this capacity, you will be responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of value propositions tailored to specific sub-segments within the bank’s retail portfolio. The core mandate involves driving sustainable growth—not just in terms of acquisition, but also in deepening engagement, boosting profitability, and ensuring high retention rates. You will act as a bridge between the customer’s needs and the bank’s internal capabilities, working closely with various departments to ensure that every proposition is relevant, competitive, and operationally viable.
Success in this role is measured by your ability to manage the financial performance of your assigned segment. This includes developing robust business cases, managing budgets, and demonstrating a clear return on investment for the initiatives you spearhead.
Key Responsibilities
Your daily operations will revolve around shaping how FNB interacts with its retail base. You will be expected to:
- Formulate and implement tactical CVP strategies that cater to the unique requirements of specific niche markets or sub-segments.
- Utilize advanced analytics, market research, and competitor benchmarking to identify white-space opportunities for growth.
- Oversee the lifecycle of propositions, from the initial design phase through to delivery, performance monitoring, and subsequent optimisation.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with teams in Product, Digital, Sales, Marketing, Risk, and Operations to ensure a seamless execution of customer-centric solutions.
- Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships that add tangible value to the segment’s offering.
- Monitor customer behaviour and management information to track the effectiveness of your propositions against key performance indicators.
What they're looking for
To be considered for this role, you should possess a strong commercial foundation and a deep understanding of the retail banking landscape in South Africa.
- **Qualifications:** A Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Management, Marketing, or Economics is mandatory, with an Honours degree being highly advantageous.
- **Experience:** 6 to 8 years of professional experience is required, ideally within Product Management, Proposition Management, Customer Strategy, or Digital Banking. Candidates with prior experience managing entry-level or mass-market banking propositions are preferred.
- **Competencies:** You must demonstrate strong commercial acumen and strategic thinking. The ability to influence stakeholders across a large organisation is critical, as is a high degree of proficiency in data analysis and financial management.
For South African professionals, a role of this seniority within a major financial institution like FNB often offers a comprehensive total cost-to-company package, typically ranging between R900,000 and R1.4 million per annum, depending on the specific seniority level and your track record. Roles in the CVP space are highly sought after as they represent a career path toward Senior Product Management, Head of Segment, or Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) functions. As this is a FirstRand Group appointment, the organisation maintains a strong commitment to Employment Equity, with a clear focus on supporting the advancement of candidates with disabilities. Always ensure your application is submitted well ahead of any listed deadlines to account for internal processing systems.
