Job Description

About the Opportunity

JUMO is seeking a driven and insightful Technical Portfolio Analyst to join their team in South Africa. This pivotal role is central to the daily operation of JUMO's loan book, with a direct impact on optimising financial returns and expanding financial inclusion. You’ll be instrumental in translating strategic decisions into tangible operational outcomes, ensuring the loan portfolio performs effectively within defined risk parameters. This is an opportunity to contribute to a dynamic environment where innovation and continuous improvement are highly valued.

Key Responsibilities

As a Technical Portfolio Analyst, your responsibilities will span across the implementation, monitoring, and optimisation of JUMO’s loan portfolio. You will work collaboratively with various departments, including product and technical teams, to ensure that the business requirements derived from Portfolio and Asset Management decisions are effectively implemented.

A key aspect of this role involves leveraging data to gain insights, troubleshoot any arising portfolio issues, and implement remedial actions. You will also be responsible for developing and enhancing reporting capabilities, including setting up alarms to proactively identify potential problems. Contributing to the evolution of the Portfolio Strategy Service, you'll help refine existing processes and explore next-generation solutions. Furthermore, you will provide crucial technical support and problem-solving assistance to different teams, utilising your coding and data analysis skills. The expectation is that you can work both independently and as part of a team, being proactive in challenging existing processes and exploring new avenues for improvement. A willingness to learn new technologies and business concepts is essential for innovation within the role.

What they're looking for

To excel in this position, candidates will need a strong academic foundation, typically holding a Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Finance, Engineering, or an equivalent tertiary qualification. A solid understanding of the credit lifecycle is paramount, enabling you to grasp the nuances of loan portfolio management.

Technical proficiency is a must, with a working knowledge of SQL and/or relevant Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) technologies such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redshift, and SQL Server. You should be adept at using these tools to extract, manipulate, and analyse data. Effective communication skills are also crucial, particularly your ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Adaptability and a proactive mindset are key attributes, as you’ll be working in a fast-paced environment and are expected to contribute to evolving services and challenge the status quo. The ability to evolve current processes and envision future service enhancements will be highly valued.

In South Africa, roles like this, blending finance, technology, and data analytics, often form the backbone of fintech companies and established financial institutions focused on digital lending and financial inclusion initiatives. Career progression typically involves moving into more senior analytical roles, portfolio management, or data science positions, with opportunities to lead projects and drive strategic initiatives.
