Job Description

Liberty is seeking an IT Systems Developer Specialist, often referred to as a Release Train Engineer (RTE) in agile frameworks, based in Johannesburg. This role is crucial for developing and maintaining software applications, ensuring they meet high standards of efficiency and align with the organisation's established software frameworks. The position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a leading financial services group that is deeply committed to growth across Africa and delivering significant value to its diverse clientele.

About the Role

The IT Systems Developer Specialist will play a key part in the software engineering lifecycle. The core of the responsibility involves translating business and functional requirements into tangible technical specifications. This includes the design, coding, debugging, and correction of programs, all within the agreed engineering standards and utilising the appropriate tools. A significant aspect of the role is the enhancement and ongoing maintenance of existing software applications, alongside the development of new solutions. The ultimate goal is to improve the overall efficiency of the engineering environment by ensuring all technical requirements are met and integrated seamlessly within the overarching software framework.

Key Responsibilities

This position demands a blend of technical prowess and a strategic understanding of software development processes. You will be responsible for:

  • Designing, developing, and implementing software solutions based on defined business and functional requirements.
  • Writing clean, efficient, and well-documented code.
  • Debugging and resolving software defects to ensure application stability and performance.
  • Maintaining and enhancing existing software applications, ensuring their continued relevance and effectiveness.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and specifications.
  • Ensuring adherence to software engineering best practices, standards, and tools.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of development processes and methodologies.
  • Participating in the full software development lifecycle, from conception to deployment and maintenance.

What They're Looking For

Liberty is looking for a candidate with a strong foundation in software engineering principles and practical experience. While specific years of experience in a direct RTE capacity may vary, experience in translating business needs into technical realities is paramount. Candidates should possess:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification, such as a First Degree in Information Studies or Information Technology.
  • One to two years of experience in software engineering technology.
  • Proven experience in translating business and functional requirements into detailed technical specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing programming code to create effective software solutions.
  • Familiarity with agile engineering principles, including Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD).
  • An understanding of concepts like API engineering, microservices, and system integration.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing platforms and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is advantageous.
  • Experience with Test-Driven Design (TDD) and software engineering tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

In South Africa, specialist IT development roles like this, particularly those involving agile methodologies and modern software engineering practices, can offer competitive remuneration. The specific salary will depend on the candidate's experience level, the complexity of the projects, and the specific skill set brought to the role. Liberty, as part of Standard Bank Group, is a major employer in the financial services sector, offering numerous opportunities for professional growth and development within its technology divisions.
