Job Description
Old Mutual is seeking a diligent Maintenance Officer to join their facilities management team in Johannesburg. This role is central to the operational success of the company’s corporate environment, requiring an individual who can balance hands-on technical upkeep with a high standard of professional client service.
The ideal candidate will be someone who understands that a well-maintained building is the foundation of a productive workplace. You will act as the frontline for facilities integrity, ensuring that the physical space supports the broader goals of the organisation while adhering to strict governance and service level agreements.
About the role
In this position, you will be responsible for the comprehensive maintenance of building infrastructure. This includes keeping a close watch on critical systems such as HVAC, water reticulation, electrical rooms, and lift services. You will also oversee general building aesthetics, ensuring that office furniture, lighting, and workspace fixtures are functional and maintained to a high standard.
Beyond the technical requirements, the role focuses heavily on stakeholder management. You will be the primary point of contact for staff queries regarding facilities, requiring an ability to resolve maintenance requests promptly. Success in this role is measured not only by the uptime of mechanical systems but by the satisfaction of the employees you support daily. You will also play a key role in supporting site safety, assisting with emergency evacuation procedures, and ensuring that all signage remains compliant with safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Your daily responsibilities will revolve around operational excellence and continuous improvement. Key tasks include:
- **System Oversight:** Regularly monitoring air-conditioning, generators, fire safety equipment, and plumbing to ensure continuous performance.
- **Reactive and Planned Maintenance:** Attending to logged maintenance calls and ensuring furniture and general office repairs are handled efficiently.
- **Stakeholder Engagement:** Building strong relationships with both internal departments and external service providers to ensure SLAs are met.
- **Administrative Diligence:** Managing workshop stock levels, reporting on maintenance trends, and assisting in the procurement process for facilities needs.
- **Process Improvement:** Proactively suggesting ways to refine facilities management practices to reduce costs and increase service delivery.
- **Compliance:** Ensuring all facilities activities adhere to corporate governance and safety policies.
What they're looking for
Old Mutual values candidates who are proactive, communicative, and technically inclined. While they are looking for specific experience, they also place a high premium on cultural fit and the ability to work within a team.
- **Education:** A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate is mandatory. While not required, an artisan qualification will be viewed as a distinct advantage.
- **Experience:** A minimum of two years of practical experience in building maintenance is necessary to hit the ground running.
- **Skills:** Strong communication skills, computer literacy, and a high level of numerical aptitude are essential. You should be comfortable with office systems and managing database-driven maintenance logs.
- **Competencies:** The ability to manage complex tasks under pressure, a commitment to accountability, and a natural collaborative spirit are key behavioural requirements.
