Job Description
Old Mutual is seeking a dedicated Job Architecture Specialist to join their team in Johannesburg. This pivotal role is instrumental in shaping and maintaining the organisation's foundational framework for understanding its workforce. The specialist will be responsible for the integrity, consistency, and strategic application of the job architecture across the entire enterprise, ensuring it aligns seamlessly with Old Mutual's broader organisational design principles and strategic objectives.
Crafting the Organisational Blueprint
At its core, this position involves the meticulous design, ongoing maintenance, and robust governance of Old Mutual's enterprise-wide job architecture. This encompasses developing and refining essential components such as job families, individual job levels, and clearly defined career streams and pathways. A key aspect of the role is ensuring that the enterprise job catalogue is not only comprehensive but also maintains a high degree of consistency and adherence to established governance principles. The specialist will play a crucial role in implementing approved job architecture standards and will be tasked with regularly reviewing existing job structures, recommending and driving improvements to enhance their effectiveness.
Furthermore, the role extends to the creation, review, and upkeep of accurate job profiles. This includes maintaining standardised templates for role profiles and supporting periodic reviews to ensure that all profiles remain current and reflective of the actual work being performed. The Job Architecture Specialist will also be involved in the critical processes of job analysis and job evaluation. This involves preparing roles for evaluation, consistently applying approved evaluation methodologies, and meticulously documenting recommendations. Maintaining the governance and records associated with these evaluations is also a significant responsibility.
Supporting Strategic Workforce Initiatives
Beyond the foundational architecture, the specialist will actively support the development of career pathways, assisting in the definition of career progression routes across various job families. This ensures that career pathways are intrinsically aligned with the organisation's evolving requirements and supports initiatives aimed at improving career mobility and transparency for employees. A crucial parallel responsibility includes supporting the development and maintenance of capability frameworks. This often involves close collaboration with Organisation Design consultants to ensure a tight alignment between capability frameworks and the overarching job architecture. The specialist will also be involved in identifying capability requirements for new or evolving functions within the organisation, ensuring that capability documentation is kept up-to-date.
This role is deeply integrated with broader Organisation Design initiatives, where the job architecture expertise is essential. The specialist will assess the impact of proposed structural changes on individual jobs and their grading, offering recommendations regarding reporting lines, role design, and overall job consistency. Participation in organisation design workshops is also expected, contributing specialist insights. A strong emphasis is placed on governance and quality assurance, ensuring adherence to job architecture principles, reviewing submissions for completeness and quality, and monitoring compliance with approved standards. Identifying opportunities to boost consistency and efficiency within these processes is a continuous objective.
The incumbent will also manage job architecture information within HR systems, notably Workday, and support any system enhancements related to job architecture. This includes validating job data for accuracy and completeness, and producing reports and insights that aid in strategic decision-making. A forward-thinking approach is encouraged, with a mandate to identify opportunities for process improvement, research emerging market practices, and recommend enhancements to existing templates, standards, and methodologies. Contributing to projects that elevate the overall job architecture capability within Old Mutual is a key performance area.
To excel in this role, candidates should possess a relevant tertiary qualification (NQF Level 7) and a minimum of four years of relevant enterprise-wide experience in Organisational Design or Job Architecture. Experience in developing and maintaining job families, career frameworks, and organisational structures is essential. Knowledge of and experience with the Workday HRIS platform would be a significant advantage. Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills are crucial, as is the ability to effectively enable HR technologies. Skills such as strategic planning, change management, data interpretation, and a knack for creative problem-solving are highly valued.
In South Africa, a role like this at a large financial institution often commands a competitive salary, typically ranging from R500,000 to R800,000 per annum, depending on experience and specific responsibilities. Old Mutual, as a major player in the financial services sector, offers significant opportunities for professional development and career progression within its extensive organisational structure.
