Job Description

Old Mutual is seeking a dynamic Employee Benefits Broker Consultant to join their team in KwaZulu-Natal. This role is pivotal in forging and nurturing relationships with intermediary partners, acting as the primary liaison for a dedicated portfolio of brokers. The core objective is to drive sustainable growth and expand Old Mutual Corporate's market presence by strengthening broker connections and encouraging the adoption of their comprehensive employee benefits solutions.

This is an individually accountable position where success hinges on effectively engaging with brokers, identifying new business avenues, and meticulously managing existing portfolios. The ideal candidate will be commercially astute, capable of influencing broker behaviour in response to evolving market dynamics, and adept at translating identified opportunities into tangible, measurable results. A deep understanding of the financial services landscape, particularly within employee benefits, is crucial for success in this client-facing role.

The Role's Core Responsibilities

The day-to-day activities of this consultant will revolve around several key areas:

  • **Business Development:** This involves actively marketing Old Mutual Corporate's diverse range of products, services, and brand to intermediaries and their client bases. A significant part of the role will be dedicated to identifying and pursuing new business opportunities to enhance market share and foster consistent growth. This proactive approach extends to assisting intermediaries in expanding their own client books by pinpointing potential clients and strategic business ventures. The consultant will be expected to champion the entire spectrum of Old Mutual Corporate's offerings to brokers and financial advisors, while simultaneously keeping a pulse on market trends, competitor activities, and industry shifts to capitalise on emerging opportunities and mitigate potential risks. Crucially, the role requires delivering on agreed-upon annual targets for new business, overall growth, and client retention.
  • **Portfolio Management:** Developing and executing strategic account plans and business strategies tailored to specific intermediaries is essential. Regular business reviews will be conducted to monitor broker performance against established objectives. The consultant will be responsible for managing and servicing existing broker relationships and their associated client portfolios, with a keen eye for cross-selling and upselling opportunities. Ensuring a consistently high standard of service delivery across all brokers within their portfolio is paramount, as is driving the retention of existing business and cultivating enduring client relationships. Analysing portfolio performance data and implementing timely corrective actions will be necessary, alongside maintaining disciplined pipeline management and accurate business reporting.
  • **Relationship Management:** Building, maintaining, and strengthening robust relationships with contracted intermediaries and their key decision-makers is a cornerstone of this position. The consultant will need to effectively influence and support these intermediaries in recommending and presenting Old Mutual Corporate solutions to their own clients. They will serve as the main point of contact between Old Mutual Corporate and their assigned intermediaries, demonstrating a thorough understanding of each intermediary's business model, growth aspirations, and client needs to provide truly value-added solutions. Facilitating seamless collaboration between intermediaries and Old Mutual's internal teams is also key to ensuring effective service delivery. Furthermore, the role involves acting as the intermediary's advocate within Old Mutual, identifying opportunities for product, service, and operational enhancements.

What You'll Bring

To excel in this role, candidates will need a specific blend of qualifications, experience, and competencies.

**Qualifications and Experience:**

  • A minimum of an NQF Level 6 qualification or its equivalent is required.
  • Possession of the RE5 qualification is preferred.
  • A relevant Bachelor's Degree would be advantageous.
  • Full FAIS compliance is mandatory.
  • A Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation would be a significant plus.

In terms of experience, a minimum of one to three years in the financial services sector is expected, with a focus on employee benefits, retirement funds, group risk, intermediary sales, business development, or relationship management. Proven experience in managing relationships with intermediaries, brokers, advisors, or clients is essential, as is a demonstrated history of successfully achieving sales and business development targets.

**Essential Competencies:** The role demands a strong aptitude in business development and sales management, strategic account management, and both portfolio and relationship management. A client-centric approach, coupled with commercial acumen and an awareness of market and industry dynamics, is vital. Candidates must possess excellent negotiation and influencing skills, the ability to identify and convert opportunities, and proficiency in pipeline and performance management. Strong presentation and facilitation skills will also be beneficial.

Behaviourally, the ideal candidate will be results-driven, demonstrating accountability and ownership. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills are paramount, as is the ability to network and collaborate effectively. Resilience, adaptability, and strong planning and organisational capabilities are expected, alongside effective problem-solving and decision-making. Initiative, proactivity, and attention to detail are also key attributes.

From a leadership perspective, candidates should exhibit strong self-leadership, performance management skills, and a drive for execution excellence. A continuous improvement mindset and agility in adapting to change are important, as is the ability to manage stakeholders effectively and foster team collaboration.

Technically, knowledge of employee benefits and retirement funds, as well as group risk products, is required. A solid understanding of the financial services industry and relevant regulatory and compliance frameworks (such as FAIS and TCF) is necessary. Proficiency in CRM and pipeline management systems, alongside a good command of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and data analysis and business reporting skills, will be crucial.

In South Africa, roles like this typically involve a competitive salary structure often including a base salary and commission or bonus based on performance. Employers in this space range from large established financial institutions like Old Mutual to specialist employee benefits consultancies and smaller advisory firms. Career progression often leads to senior broker consultant roles, management positions within intermediary consulting, or specialisation in specific benefit areas.
