Job Description

Old Mutual, a prominent financial services group and a stalwart of the South African economic landscape, is seeking to bolster its technical capabilities with a versatile Field Service Engineer and Audio Visual (AV) Technician. This role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth operation of essential IT hardware, software, and cutting-edge audio-visual systems across the organisation's Cape Town operations. If you possess a knack for troubleshooting diverse technical challenges and a passion for facilitating seamless communication and collaboration, this opportunity could be your next career step.

About the Role

The Field Service Engineer & AV Technician will form a crucial part of Old Mutual's end-user computing (EUC) support structure. This involves providing vital first and second-line IT support to employees, ensuring their devices – from laptops and desktops to mobile phones – are not only set up but also consistently maintained for optimal performance and security. Beyond the standard IT support functions, the role extends into the dynamic world of audio-visual technology. You will be the go-to person for setting up, managing, and troubleshooting the AV equipment that underpins critical meetings, presentations, and conferencing events. This dual focus means you'll be instrumental in maintaining both the everyday functionality of IT infrastructure and the sophisticated capabilities required for modern business communication.

Your Responsibilities

In this multifaceted position, your day-to-day activities will encompass a broad spectrum of technical duties. On the IT support front, you will be responsible for:

  • Installing, configuring, and maintaining user hardware and software.
  • Performing essential device imaging, re-imaging, and deployment tasks.
  • Diagnosing and resolving issues related to hardware, software, and basic network connectivity.
  • Managing user accounts within Active Directory and handling password resets.
  • Supporting essential Microsoft 365 applications such as Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive.
  • Ensuring system compliance through Intune/SCCM for patching, updates, and security policies.
  • Logging, tracking, and resolving IT incidents within defined service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Facilitating the onboarding and offboarding processes for new and departing employees, including device setup and access provisioning.
  • Maintaining detailed IT asset registers and supporting documentation.
  • Escalating complex technical issues to specialised teams when necessary.

In parallel, your AV responsibilities will include:

  • Setting up, configuring, and operating a range of AV equipment, including projectors, microphones, sound systems, and video conferencing units.
  • Conducting regular maintenance, testing, and health checks on AV systems to prevent disruptions.
  • Troubleshooting AV-related problems that arise in meeting rooms, boardrooms, and during events.
  • Supporting and managing video conferencing platforms like Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
  • Providing both on-site and remote assistance to users and stakeholders for AV-related queries.
  • Managing AV cabling, ensuring proper connectivity, and configuring AV setups.
  • Supporting live events, presentations, webinars, and boardroom meetings, often requiring a calm demeanour under pressure.
  • Ensuring the careful storage, handling, and tracking of all AV equipment.
  • Regularly maintaining and testing AV equipment to guarantee peak operational status.
  • Documenting AV configurations and maintaining logs of issues and resolutions.

What You Bring

To excel in this role, Old Mutual is looking for candidates with a solid foundation in IT support and a growing expertise in audio-visual technologies. A Grade 12/Matric qualification is essential, with relevant IT or AV certifications being a significant advantage. While a full IT-related diploma or degree is beneficial, demonstrable experience is highly valued. You should have between one to three years of practical experience in either an IT support or AV environment, or a combination of both.

Your technical toolkit should be robust, including:

  • Proficiency in Windows 11 support and troubleshooting.
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft 365 / Office 365 applications.
  • Experience with Active Directory for user and group management.
  • Familiarity with Intune / SCCM (Endpoint Manager).
  • A grasp of basic networking concepts (LAN, Wi-Fi, VPN, 3G Sim-Card).
  • Hands-on experience with AV equipment and conferencing systems.
  • Strong hardware troubleshooting skills for laptops, printers, and peripherals.
  • Knowledge of AV hardware and software functionalities.
  • Familiarity with video conferencing tools such as Teams and Zoom.
  • A foundational understanding of sound systems, microphones, and acoustics.
  • Basic troubleshooting and fault-finding abilities.
  • Experience with display technologies like HDMI, VGA, and wireless solutions.

Beyond technical skills, strong soft skills are paramount. You’ll need excellent communication and customer service abilities, sharp problem-solving and analytical thinking, and the capacity to perform under pressure, especially during critical live events. Good time management and multitasking skills are essential, as is the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. The role may involve occasional travel to branches like Paarl and Tygervalley (Elite), and the physical ability to move and set up equipment is necessary.

This role offers a chance to contribute to a respected South African institution while building on your technical expertise. As a Field Service Engineer and AV Technician, you can expect to gain valuable experience across diverse IT and AV domains, essential for career progression in the technology sector.
