Job Description
About the Role
This position at a prominent financial services group involves managing all cash-related client requirements within a branch setting. This encompasses direct interactions with walk-in clients, as well as support for automated teller machines (ATMs) and advanced deposit-taking devices (ANAs). The core function is to process transactions accurately, maintain security, and adhere strictly to all established procedures. Beyond transactional duties, the role also involves proactively identifying opportunities to guide clients towards more suitable banking channels and supporting sales initiatives through high-quality customer engagement.
The organisation is a significant presence in African financial services, with a global reach. They offer numerous career advancement opportunities and a collaborative environment alongside experienced professionals. Their client base is diverse, ranging from individuals and businesses of varying sizes to high-net-worth families and large corporations. The group is dedicated to fostering economic growth across Africa and providing meaningful value to both clients and communities, ensuring a strong sense of purpose for its employees.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities for this role include:
- Providing comprehensive cash services to walk-in clients, assessing their needs, and efficiently completing both cash and card-related transactions to ensure a consistent and positive client experience.
- Managing the branch's cash assets by carefully handling, monitoring, transporting, storing, and balancing cash holdings in strict accordance with company policies, established limits, and governance frameworks. This includes receiving cash deliveries from security services and clients.
- Ensuring the continuous availability of ATMs and ANAs through regular replenishment, balancing, basic maintenance, and initial troubleshooting. More complex technical or system issues must be escalated promptly to the relevant support teams to maximise machine uptime.
- Implementing robust risk and compliance practices, including fulfilling duty of care requirements, escalating transactions that exceed specified limits, and safeguarding client information through proper document sequencing, filing, and maintaining confidentiality.
- Contributing to operational reporting and ongoing improvements by completing necessary reports, updating management information systems and capability charts, collecting data on failures or variations, and applying self-correcting measures to enhance service delivery.
What They're Looking For
Candidates should possess the following qualifications and experience:
- A National Certificate (NQF 5) or an equivalent qualification is essential.
- A minimum of 1 to 2 years' experience in branch banking, specifically in a frontline cash or teller role, or a similar position. This experience should involve supporting walk-in client demand and handling a high volume of transactions.
- Demonstrated proficiency in cash handling, including processing bulk cash, balancing funds, controlling cashflows, and operating within prescribed limits. A strong track record of accuracy, evidenced by minimal discrepancies or errors, is crucial.
- Experience in supporting ATM and ANA operations, such as replenishment, balancing, and initial troubleshooting, while adhering to strict operational and regulatory requirements.
- A solid understanding of branch governance and compliance, including established banking procedures, audit readiness protocols, confidentiality standards, and risk escalation processes.
This type of role, often known as a teller or universal banker, is a common entry point into the South African banking sector. While specific salaries vary based on experience and the financial institution, one can typically expect an entry-level position to offer a competitive salary, often in the range of R10 000 to R18 000 per month, sometimes with additional performance incentives. Major employers include the 'big four' banks and other established financial service providers. Growth paths can lead to more specialised roles such as personal banker, a customer service manager, or into back-office operations, with further training and development opportunities.
