This role is central to enhancing the technological backbone of South Africa's e-commerce logistics, a sector experiencing rapid innovation. TFS is instrumental in managing the complex flow of over 30 million orders each year, underpinning the success of numerous businesses and contributing significantly to the nation's economic landscape. The ideal candidate will join a forward-thinking team dedicated to leveraging cutting-edge technology to achieve operational excellence in logistics.
About the role
This is a significant opportunity for an experienced software engineer to play a leading role in the development and optimisation of systems critical to the logistics operations at Takealot. The position focuses on the intricate challenges of managing both parcel and food deliveries across South Africa. The successful applicant will be tasked with collaborating closely with business stakeholders to refine existing processes, thereby driving greater efficiency in delivery chains. Furthermore, the role involves a proactive approach to researching and defining innovative solutions within the logistics domain, utilising primarily open-source platforms. A key aspect of this position is the expectation of end-to-end ownership of the solutions developed, from conception through to deployment and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Software Engineer will be responsible for a range of technical and collaborative tasks designed to elevate Takealot's logistical capabilities. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and optimising software systems that manage the end-to-end lifecycle of deliveries, encompassing both general parcels and specialised food items across the diverse South African landscape.
- Working collaboratively with business units to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies within current delivery processes, and subsequently designing and implementing software-driven improvements.
- Undertaking research into emerging technologies and methodologies relevant to logistics and e-commerce fulfilment, with the aim of proposing and defining forward-thinking solutions.
- Contributing significantly to projects predominantly utilising open-source technologies and platforms.
- Assuming full responsibility for the software solutions developed, ensuring their robustness, scalability, and alignment with business objectives from inception to production.
What they're looking for
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess a strong foundation in software engineering and a proven track record in delivering high-quality code. The essential qualifications and experience sought are:
- A tertiary qualification in Computer Science or a related field. Applicants without a formal degree or advanced diploma may be considered if they can demonstrate equivalent practical experience.
- A minimum of five years of professional experience in writing robust, efficient, and production-ready code.
- Demonstrated experience working with SQL database systems.
- Proficiency in developing and deploying applications within a Linux environment.
- Strong command of one or more programming languages such as Java, Scala, Angular, Python, or C#. The company also values adaptability and a willingness to expand one's programming language skillset.
In South Africa, senior software engineering roles within established e-commerce or logistics firms typically command competitive remuneration packages, reflecting the demand for specialised skills. Companies like Takealot are at the forefront of the digital transformation in retail and logistics, offering excellent career progression opportunities. Professionals in this field can expect a growing demand for their expertise as businesses increasingly rely on technology to streamline operations and enhance customer experiences.
