Job Description
The Takealot Group, a cornerstone of South Africa’s digital economy, is currently inviting applications for a Finance Analyst to join their Corporate FP&A division in Cape Town. As the organisation evolves from traditional operational reporting toward a model driven by strategic value creation, this role acts as a critical bridge. You will be responsible for managing the Group’s internal reporting infrastructure, ensuring that data-driven insights are accurate, consistent, and readily available to leadership teams.
About the role
This position is designed for a finance professional who is as comfortable with complex data architectures as they are with high-level financial reporting. You will take ownership of the Group’s standardised reporting suite, acting as the primary custodian of the "single version of the truth" used by executive committees, divisional leads, and the board.
Beyond routine reporting, this role is a driver of digital transformation. You will lead the automation agenda, identifying manual bottlenecks and replacing them with efficient, automated workflows. By leveraging your technical skills in SQL and BI tools, you will empower the broader finance team to shift their focus from data preparation to strategic analysis and executive support.
Key Responsibilities
Your core responsibilities will include the end-to-end management of the month-end process, ensuring that all reconciliations, management accounts, and financial deliverables meet strict quality standards. Key tasks include:
- **Reporting Architecture:** Design, govern, and maintain the Looker reporting environment, ensuring that dashboards remain accurate and relevant for stakeholders across AP, FinOps, and Customer Insights.
- **Automation Initiatives:** Prioritise and execute projects that reduce manual labour. This involves building and redesigning processes using advanced Excel, SQL, and emerging AI tools.
- **Systems Integration:** Partner with IT, BI, and Product teams to define data requirements, ensure robust integration between platforms like TM1 and Looker, and validate output quality.
- **Leadership & Collaboration:** Provide mentorship to junior analysts, review their work, and build strong, collaborative relationships with business unit finance partners to ensure reporting changes are communicated clearly and effectively.
- **Process Documentation:** Standardise internal controls and document workflows to ensure that reporting logic remains transparent and resilient during peak cycles.
What they're looking for
Takealot seeks candidates who possess a blend of rigorous financial acumen and a modern, analytical toolkit. Successful applicants should demonstrate:
- **Academic Qualifications:** A BCom (Hons) or equivalent degree in Finance or Accounting. Professional designations such as CA(SA), CIMA, or CFA are highly regarded.
- **Experience:** A minimum of 5 years in FP&A, management reporting, or BI-focused finance roles, with proven success in leading month-end cycles.
- **Technical Proficiency:** Advanced expertise in Excel is mandatory, alongside working knowledge of SQL and experience with BI platforms like Looker. Familiarity with TM1, Sage, or Python is a distinct advantage.
- **Strategic Mindset:** A demonstrable history of implementing process redesigns that have saved time or mitigated operational risk.
- **Soft Skills:** Clear communication abilities and experience mentoring junior team members.
For South African finance professionals, a role within an e-commerce giant like Takealot represents a high-profile opportunity to work in a fast-paced retail tech environment. Roles of this nature, particularly those requiring strong technical BI skills alongside financial reporting expertise, typically fall within the senior analyst bracket. Salaries in this sector are highly competitive, often supplemented by the dynamic benefits associated with large-scale digital platforms. Career paths for this position usually lead toward senior management in corporate FP&A, commercial finance leadership, or technical finance-business partnering.
Requirements
- BCom (Hons) or equivalent in Finance/Accounting; CA(SA), CIMA or CFA (completed or in progress) advantageous.
- At least 5 years' relevant experience in FP&A, management reporting or a finance/BI role, including ownership of a month-end or reporting process.
- Demonstrated track record of delivering reporting automation or process redesign with measurable results.
- Strong understanding of accounting, management accounts and financial reporting.
- Advanced Excel and working SQL skills; experience building in Looker or a similar BI tool.
- Familiarity with TM1, Sage and Board beneficial; exposure to Python or AI/automation tools is a plus.
- Experience in e-commerce, retail, marketplace or tech highly advantageous.
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior analysts preferred.
