Job Description

FNB, a prominent South African financial institution, is seeking a skilled Algorithmic Trading Software Developer to join their Global Markets division in Johannesburg. This is a crucial role for an individual passionate about high-performance systems and the intricate world of electronic trading. You will be at the forefront of designing, developing, and enhancing sophisticated solutions that drive the bank's market-making and trading strategies across a diverse range of asset classes, including Foreign Exchange (FX), Fixed Income, Commodities, and Equities.

About the Role

The core of this position involves building and optimising low-latency, high-throughput trading applications. You'll be translating complex trading strategies, quantitative models, and market microstructure insights into robust, scalable, and production-ready technology. This isn't just about writing code; it's about understanding the business needs and how technology can directly impact trading execution quality, pricing accuracy, and overall market-making capabilities. You'll collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, including traders, quantitative analysts (quants), product owners, business analysts, and other technology professionals, to bring innovative solutions to life.

Your responsibilities will span the entire software development lifecycle, from initial design and coding through rigorous testing, seamless deployment, and ongoing monitoring. A key aspect of the role is to contribute to both the strategic evolution of the trading platform and the day-to-day support, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and operational stability. Embracing modern software engineering practices, data analytics, and DevOps principles will be essential to accelerate delivery and foster innovation within FNB's electronic trading ecosystem. You will report to the Platform Lead for Digital Pricing & Market Making (DPMM), playing a pivotal part in delivering tangible business value.

Key Responsibilities

Your day-to-day will involve a range of technical and collaborative activities:

  • **Develop and Enhance Trading Platforms:** Design, code, test, and support high-performance algorithmic trading, electronic pricing, and market-making platforms. This includes building applications capable of processing real-time market data, pricing information, and execution workflows at extreme speeds.
  • **Implement Trading Logic:** Develop sophisticated smart order routing, execution algorithms, market-making logic, and automated trading workflows. The goal is to continuously improve execution quality and client outcomes.
  • **Build Reusable Components:** Create and maintain foundational frameworks, services, and libraries that underpin trading operations, pricing engines, risk management systems, analytics, and market connectivity.
  • **Optimise Performance:** Apply advanced techniques to maximise application performance. This involves meticulous code design, profiling, and tuning, focusing on algorithm efficiency, memory management, and latency reduction. You'll delve into low-latency engineering principles, potentially including lock-free programming and cache-friendly data structures.
  • **Ensure System Resilience:** Develop robust market data ingestion and distribution services, as well as resilient pricing, execution, and risk management components designed for high-availability production environments.
  • **Collaborate and Innovate:** Work with quants and researchers to validate trading strategies and platform enhancements. Leverage historical data and statistical analysis to identify opportunities for automation and strategy improvement.
  • **Drive Operational Excellence:** Build real-time monitoring and telemetry capabilities for enhanced observability and operational decision-making. Identify and implement automation to boost efficiency and mitigate risk.
  • **Adhere to Engineering Standards:** Participate in architecture reviews and contribute to evolving the trading platform's architecture and engineering standards. Develop production-quality code using modern Java practices, object-oriented design, and potentially microservices architectures.

In South Africa, software development roles within the financial sector, particularly those focused on algorithmic trading and low-latency systems, are highly sought after and can command competitive remuneration packages. Employers often include major banking groups, investment firms, and specialised fintech companies. Career progression typically involves moving into more senior development roles, architecture positions, or even transitioning into quant research or trading roles, depending on individual aspirations and expertise.
