Job Description

This role presents a significant opportunity for a detail-oriented and analytically minded professional to contribute to the strategic management of remuneration and reward programmes within a prominent South African company. The core purpose of the position is to delve into data, unearthing insights, implementing checks, and generating reports that underpin crucial decision-making processes related to employee compensation and benefits. This involves a deep dive into remuneration costs, trends, and variances, providing the necessary information for informed choices, ensuring payroll governance is robust, supporting budgeting efforts, maintaining compliance, and optimising various reward initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be instrumental in a wide array of analytical and reporting functions. This includes dissecting remuneration costs and identifying key trends and deviations, offering actionable insights to guide strategic decisions. You'll conduct complex analyses, such as cost movement studies, market benchmarking assessments, and pay equity evaluations, alongside scenario modelling to predict the financial implications of proposed changes to remuneration and benefits. Furthermore, you’ll be expected to investigate queries related to remuneration, providing data-backed recommendations.

A substantial portion of the role will involve reporting and benchmarking. This entails preparing and submitting remuneration data to external survey providers, then analysing the results to compare the organisation’s compensation practices against market standards. You will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving essential remuneration reports, dashboards, and management information systems, producing both regular updates and ad hoc analyses for management and governance committees.

Payroll governance and controls are also a key focus. This involves performing reconciliations, validation checks, and control reviews to guarantee the accuracy and integrity of remuneration data. You will verify inputs and outputs through balancing procedures, exception reporting, and variance analysis, ensuring that remuneration and employee data within relevant systems are meticulously maintained and accurate.

The position also touches upon leave management and compliance reporting. Responsibilities include reconciling leave balances and conducting control checks to ensure the correct application of leave policies. You'll monitor leave-related trends, providing analysis to support effective leave management and adherence to governance frameworks. This extends to supporting regulatory and compliance reporting, contributing to submissions for various statutory requirements by ensuring data accuracy and integrity across all remuneration, benefits, and compliance reporting processes.

Finally, the role champions data analytics and continuous improvement. You'll analyse employee remuneration and workforce data to pinpoint trends, anomalies, and areas for enhancement. This involves supporting the development and refinement of remuneration models, analytical tools, and reporting processes, contributing to the ongoing evolution of reward-related systems, data quality, and reporting capabilities. Identifying and driving operational process improvements within reward and benefit functions is also a vital aspect of the role.

What They're Looking For

Candidates should possess strong analytical capabilities, with advanced proficiency in Excel and data analysis techniques being paramount. A robust understanding of numerical analysis, critical thinking, and the ability to interpret complex remuneration, payroll, and employee data are essential. Skills in report development, data visualisation, and management information reporting are also highly valued.

A keen eye for detail and a commitment to data accuracy are non-negotiable. The ability to solve problems effectively and undertake scenario modelling is crucial, complemented by strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills. Individuals who demonstrate accountability and ownership, work well collaboratively within a team, and possess adaptability and resilience will be well-suited. A completer-finisher orientation, along with a commitment to confidentiality and professional integrity, is also important.

Academically, a Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as Finance, Accounting, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Economics, or Data Science is required. In terms of experience, candidates should have three to five years of work experience where analytical skills have been significantly applied. While not essential, prior experience in the reward function would be considered advantageous.
