Job Description
Takealot Group, at the forefront of South Africa's e-commerce revolution, is actively seeking a skilled and driven Buyer with a specialisation in Computer Components to become a vital part of their Cape Town-based operation. As a company experiencing hyper-growth, Takealot is committed to fostering an environment where bright, innovative, and diligent individuals can thrive. They offer a compelling remuneration package designed for flexibility, a stimulating work atmosphere, and the assurance of engaging challenges for those eager to contribute to building something significant within the digital retail landscape.
About the Role
This position is central to the strategic development and operational success of the Computer Components department at Takealot.com. The core mandate involves crafting and implementing a comprehensive strategy aimed at propelling growth across multiple facets of the business. This includes expanding sales figures, broadening the array of brands and suppliers represented, and introducing a steady stream of new, relevant product listings. Success will be measured against key financial and service-level performance indicators, encompassing sales volume, profit margins, product availability, and stock cover.
The Buyer will be instrumental in identifying and capitalising on market trends and evolving consumer demands. This requires a proactive approach to sourcing and evaluating new brands and suppliers, ensuring they align with the overarching growth plan. Furthermore, the role demands a keen understanding of the competitive e-commerce environment and the ability to discern opportunities for innovation and differentiation.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Computer Components Buyer are multifaceted, focusing on both strategic planning and day-to-day execution:
- **Develop and Execute Strategy:** Create and implement a detailed strategy for the Computer Components department, focusing on escalating sales, expanding supplier and brand portfolios, and increasing product listings. This plan must be robust enough to drive tangible growth.
- **Supplier and Brand Management:** Proactively identify, source, and onboard new brands and suppliers to enhance the product offering. This involves nurturing existing supplier relationships, negotiating favourable pricing and trading terms, and ensuring adherence to strict Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- **Financial and Performance Management:** Consistently achieve and surpass critical financial targets, including sales, margin, and product availability metrics. Monitor and manage stock levels effectively, implementing replenishment strategies to optimise stock cover and minimise stockouts.
- **Promotional Planning and Merchandising:** Design and execute effective promotional programmes, securing attractive deals for customers. Play a key role in product merchandising on the website to maximise visibility and sales conversion.
- **Customer Experience Enhancement:** Collaborate closely with operations and customer service teams to ensure a superior customer experience. This includes monitoring product return rates, assisting customer service with technical queries, and resolving customer complaints efficiently.
- **Data Analysis and Problem Solving:** Utilise data analytics to inform decision-making, identify root causes of issues, and implement effective solutions. This requires strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
What They're Looking For
To excel in this role, candidates should possess a strong foundation in business and commerce, ideally with a relevant tertiary qualification such as a Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Business Science or Commerce. A minimum of three to five years of experience in related fields, including retail, commerce, or e-commerce, is essential.
Candidates must demonstrate a proven ability to cultivate and manage robust supplier relationships, with existing networks within the industry being a significant advantage. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is a must, as it will be a primary tool for data analysis and planning.
A solutions-oriented, "can-do" attitude, coupled with self-motivation, is highly valued. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and critical thinking capabilities, with a knack for leveraging data to drive informed purchasing decisions and problem resolution. Excellent product and buying planning skills, along with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively and manage changing circumstances, are crucial. A collaborative spirit and a genuine passion for the technology industry and the potential of e-commerce are also key attributes. An entrepreneurial and commercial mindset will enable the successful applicant to identify and capitalise on business opportunities within the dynamic online retail space.
In South Africa, buyer roles within large e-commerce operations, especially in high-demand sectors like computer components, can attract competitive salaries, often reflecting the experience level and the responsibilities involved. This type of role is typically found within major online retailers and large distribution companies. Career progression can lead to senior buyer positions, category management, or even procurement management roles, offering a solid path within the rapidly expanding e-commerce sector.
