Job Description

Netcare Pretoria East Hospital is currently looking for a dedicated General Nurse to join their professional team in Ward 16. The hospital is seeking a practitioner who is not only clinically competent but also deeply aligned with the organisation’s core values of compassion, dignity, and truth. This is an opportunity for a nursing professional to contribute to a high-standard healthcare environment where patient safety and quality of care remain the primary focus.

About the role

In this position, you will be responsible for delivering essential nursing care that adheres to the established nursing process, hospital policies, and relevant legislation. Whether you are assisting with admissions, facilitating patient discharges, or managing transfers, your role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth operational flow of the ward.

Beyond core clinical duties, you will be expected to maintain meticulous records and ensure that all patient documentation is accurate and submitted on time. You will also play an active role in maintaining the safety and hygiene of the clinical environment, ensuring that equipment and patient spaces meet the hospital’s strict infection control standards. As a member of the nursing team, you will act as a primary point of contact for patients and their families, requiring a high degree of empathy and professional communication.

Key Responsibilities

Your daily responsibilities will be varied, demanding both technical nursing skills and a proactive, team-oriented mindset. Key tasks include:

  • Providing high-quality general nursing care in accordance with current best practices.
  • Assisting with triage, patient registration, and the seamless movement of patients during admissions and discharges.
  • Responding promptly to call bells to ensure patient comfort and safety.
  • Ensuring that clinical waste is handled correctly, following hospital-specific protocols.
  • Participating in shift handovers to ensure continuity of care across all teams.
  • Maintaining clear and effective communication with multidisciplinary staff, patients, and their loved ones.

What they're looking for

To be considered for this role, you must be a qualified nursing professional who is registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC). The hospital values practitioners who can remain composed under pressure while delivering compassionate care.

  • **Qualifications:** You must possess a Basic General Nursing qualification and maintain an active, good-standing registration with the SANC.
  • **Experience:** While previous experience in a hospital or private clinical environment is not strictly mandatory for all applicants, it is considered a significant advantage.
  • **Soft Skills:** Success in this role depends on your ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Excellent interpersonal skills and a natural inclination toward empathy are essential, as you will frequently interact with patients in vulnerable states.
  • **Flexibility:** As this is a clinical role within a hospital, you must be willing to work a flexible roster, which will include night duties, weekends, and public holidays.

Working as a General Nurse within a large private group like Netcare typically offers a structured career path, with opportunities for specialisation in various clinical disciplines. In the South African private sector, general nursing roles are often compensated based on years of experience and specific clinical certifications, with additional pay for shift allowances and public holidays. For those looking to grow, this role provides an excellent foundation for moving into unit management or specialised nursing fields within the private healthcare system.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Enrolled in or passed out of Basic General Nursing Qualification.
  • Registration with SANC as a General Nurse.
  • Previous experience in a hospital environment would be advantageous.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Compassionate nature.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Professional flexibility in working hours while supporting daily business operations, including weekend, public holiday, and night duty shifts.
  • Will interact with internal and external customers through several different means.
