Job Description
Netcare Pretoria East Hospital is currently looking for a dedicated General Nurse to join their professional team within Ward 16. The hospital is known for its high standards of patient-centric care, and this role is designed for a practitioner who is committed to upholding these values while providing expert clinical support in a fast-paced environment.
About the role
As a General Nurse at this facility, you will play a central role in the daily clinical operations of the ward. This position requires someone who can seamlessly integrate into the nursing process, ensuring that patient care is delivered consistently with the hospital’s internal policies and broader national nursing legislation. You will be expected to serve as a vital link between the medical team, the patients, and their families, ensuring that communication remains clear and that every patient is treated with dignity and respect.
The role is demanding and requires a high level of professional resilience. You will be responsible for maintaining the ward’s administrative integrity, which includes accurate record-keeping, managing patient files, and handling the logistics of admissions, transfers, and discharges. In addition, you must be a proactive team member who upholds the highest standards of hygiene and infection control to ensure the safety of all patients and staff within the department.
Key Responsibilities
Your daily contributions will focus on providing high-quality nursing care while ensuring the ward runs smoothly and efficiently. Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering comprehensive general nursing care in line with the established nursing process.
- Managing patient admissions, discharges, and transfers promptly to ensure effective bed management.
- Assisting with the triage and registration of incoming patients.
- Ensuring all medical documentation is recorded accurately and submitted within required timeframes.
- Maintaining clinical equipment and ensuring that patient care areas meet the hospital’s hygiene standards.
- Responding to call bells efficiently to address patient needs as they arise.
- Actively participating in shift handovers to ensure continuity of care.
- Adhering to clinical waste protocols and rigorous infection control measures.
What they're looking for
To be successful in this position, you must be a registered professional with the South African Nursing Council (SANC). The hospital values applicants who have a genuine passion for healthcare and the ability to thrive under pressure.
- **Qualifications:** You must hold a Basic General Nursing qualification or be currently enrolled in the final stages of your programme.
- **Registration:** Current, active registration with the SANC is non-negotiable.
- **Experience:** While previous experience in a hospital environment is not strictly required, it is considered a significant advantage.
- **Soft Skills:** You should possess excellent interpersonal abilities, a compassionate disposition, and strong verbal communication skills.
- **Flexibility:** The role requires a candidate who is comfortable working shifts, including weekends, public holidays, and night duty as necessitated by the hospital’s operational requirements.
In the South African private healthcare sector, General Nurses typically find that working for large hospital groups like Netcare offers a structured career path with opportunities to specialise in fields such as ICU, theatres, or paediatric nursing. Salaries for this position are generally competitive and are influenced by the specific post-basic qualifications held by the nurse, as well as the number of night or weekend shifts worked. For early-career nurses, this role serves as an excellent foundation for gaining exposure to a high-volume, multi-disciplinary environment.
