Job Description

Absa Bank is seeking a skilled Treasury – Funds Transfer Pricing Specialist to join their Sandton-based team. This role is pivotal in overseeing and managing the Funding and Liquidity Management (FLM) function across Absa's regional operations (ARO). The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring robust compliance with regulatory and board-level requirements, optimising funding strategies, and effectively managing funding costs.

With a legacy spanning over a century, Absa is a prominent African financial institution with a strong regional and international presence. A career at Absa offers the opportunity to contribute to the bank's exciting growth trajectory, reshaping its future and solidifying its position as a leading African group.

About the Role

The Treasury – Funds Transfer Pricing Specialist will play a critical role in shaping Absa's financial strategies by providing expert oversight of funding and liquidity risk across various banking entities within the ARO. This involves proactively identifying potential funding risks and ensuring adequate funding support is in place. The specialist will serve as a subject matter expert, guiding in-country treasuries and business units on developing and implementing effective funding strategies and targets. The ultimate goal is to enhance market primacy, optimise funding costs, and support business growth and profitability.

This position requires a proactive and analytical approach to managing complex financial information. The specialist will be instrumental in driving efficiency and effectiveness within the treasury function, ensuring alignment with both local and group-level objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Reviewing and challenging the funding and liquidity risk positions and plans of ARO banking entities, offering insights into potential risks and required funding support.
  • Providing expert advice to in-country treasuries and businesses on setting appropriate funding strategies and targets to optimise costs and enhance market position.
  • Developing and optimising funding strategies and plans to support market share growth, improve returns, and reduce costs. This involves engaging with in-country and Group Treasury Execution Services (TES) functions to understand wholesale funding market capacity and opportunities.
  • Leading engagements with in-country treasuries on strategic planning requirements, determining foreign currency funding needs for ARO entities, and preparing regular updates for the Treasury Committee and the Board as part of the integrated planning process.
  • Conducting monthly reviews and analyses of funding and liquidity risk movements across ARO, supporting BA610 reporting.
  • Overseeing BA610 liquidity risk reporting for ARO entities, liaising with the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) and ensuring alignment with Group FLM requirements.
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities to optimise entity funding structures and sovereign investment strategies to enhance Absa Group’s Return on Risk-Adjusted Capital (RoRC).
  • Collaborating with Group FLM and Treasury Financial Strategy & Transformation Initiatives (FSTI) to advise on foreign currency requirements from Absa Bank South Africa and sovereign investment strategies.
  • Engaging with ARO Global Markets to ensure effective implementation and monitoring of funding limits and exposures, supporting business growth and compliance with board-level liquidity requirements.
  • Coordinating FLM-related activities, including contingency planning, SARB requirements, and local regulatory and Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO) needs across ARO.
  • Supporting entity treasuries with Integrated Liquidity Adequacy Assessment Process (ILAAP) submissions and contributing to the drafting and governance of Group ILAAP requirements for ARO.

What They're Looking For

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Commerce, or Management Studies.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a technical or managerial capacity, with a strong background in Finance, Balance Sheet Management, Funding and Liquidity Management (FLM), and/or Treasury Execution.
