Job Description
About the Role
Liberty is seeking a skilled Specialist in Model Development for their Treasury Capital Management (TCM) division. This critical role involves leveraging advanced quantitative expertise to contribute to the ongoing creation, refinement, and upkeep of the organisation's integrated suite of TCM models. You will play an integral part in the practical execution of model builds and sophisticated data analytics, with a steadfast commitment to ensuring all outputs adhere to the stringent requirements of the Group Model Risk Framework. The core focus of this position lies in the tangible implementation of modelling solutions across key financial domains, including economic and regulatory capital, liquidity management, and interest rate risk. The ultimate aim is to empower the organisation with robust, data-driven insights for effective financial management.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will cover a broad spectrum of quantitative and analytical tasks essential for maintaining and enhancing the TCM modelling framework. This includes:
- Contributing to the design and development of new quantitative models, ensuring they are robust, accurate, and aligned with regulatory and internal standards.
- Supporting the implementation and maintenance of existing models, overseeing their performance and making necessary adjustments.
- Conducting in-depth data analysis to extract meaningful insights and inform model development and validation processes.
- Performing data cleansing and preparation to ensure the integrity and suitability of datasets for quantitative modelling.
- Collaborating with various teams to understand their modelling needs and translate them into practical, implementable solutions.
- Ensuring all model development and associated documentation meet the rigorous standards set by the Group Model Risk Framework.
What They're Looking For
To excel in this role, you will need a solid foundation in quantitative finance and a proven track record in developing and applying financial models. Key requirements include:
- A relevant first-degree qualification in fields such as Finance and Accounting, Information Studies, Information Technology, Mathematical Sciences, or Quantitative Studies.
- A minimum of 3-4 years of experience within a financial services environment, specifically in a quantitative risk, treasury, or balance sheet management function. This experience should provide a strong understanding of how financial metrics are applied in practice.
- Demonstrable practical experience in statistical programming and data science. Proficiency in tools like Python, R, or SQL is essential for developing, testing, and executing quantitative models.
- Exposure to treasury-specific areas such as Economic Capital, Liquidity Risk (e.g., LCR/NSFR), Capital Management (e.g., ICAAP), or Interest Rate Risk in the Banking Book (IRRBB). Familiarity with the modelling requirements in these areas is crucial.
- Experience with data engineering and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes. The ability to manage and cleanse large, often unstructured, datasets is vital for ensuring model data integrity.
- Strong behavioural competencies, including the ability to adopt practical approaches, articulate information clearly, check details meticulously, interact effectively with others, interpret data accurately, manage tasks efficiently, meet deadlines, produce high-quality output, act decisively, work collaboratively in teams, and uphold organisational standards.
- A solid understanding of technical competencies such as banking processes and procedures, data analytics, data compliance and quality, financial acumen, financial analysis, planning, forecasting, budgeting, quantitative analysis, and statistical/mathematical analysis. Familiarity with GAAP is also expected.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a quantitative specialist to contribute to a leading financial institution, working on challenging projects that have a direct impact on strategic decision-making. In South Africa, specialist roles in model development within the banking sector often command competitive salaries, reflecting the demand for these highly technical skills. Career progression can lead to more senior modelling roles, risk management positions, or opportunities within data science leadership.
