Job Description
Takealot.com, a prominent player in the South African e-commerce landscape, is embarking on an ambitious expansion by establishing a new cross-border commerce business unit. This initiative aims to connect international sellers with the burgeoning South African consumer market via Takealot's established platform. To spearhead the operational success of this venture, they are seeking an experienced Operations Manager for their Cross-Border Selling division. This role is fundamental to building and scaling a seamless experience for both international vendors and local shoppers.
The core purpose of this position is to architect, implement, and continually refine the operational infrastructure that underpins the cross-border selling channel. This encompasses the entire journey of an international seller, from their initial registration and onboarding through to the intricate details of fulfilment, inventory management, and ongoing performance evaluation. Essentially, the individual in this role will be the operational linchpin of this new business area, setting performance benchmarks, constructing the necessary processes, and fostering collaborative relationships to ensure international sellers thrive on Takealot while South African customers receive an exceptional level of service.
The Role's Responsibilities
The Operations Manager will be tasked with a broad spectrum of duties, all centred around establishing and maintaining efficient cross-border operations. This includes:
- **Seller Lifecycle Management:** Designing and taking ownership of the complete process for registering and onboarding international sellers onto the Takealot platform. This involves creating a smooth and efficient entry point for new vendors.
- **Logistics and Fulfilment:** Establishing and managing the operational framework that governs the movement of goods from international seller warehouses to their final destinations. This requires a deep understanding of cross-border logistics.
- **Inventory Oversight:** Owning the processes and standards for effective inventory management across the entire cross-border channel, ensuring accuracy and availability.
- **Quality Assurance:** Defining and enforcing product quality standards to uphold Takealot's reputation and customer satisfaction.
- **Communication Strategy:** Designing and overseeing a structured and scalable framework for communicating with sellers, ensuring they are well-informed and supported.
- **Stakeholder Collaboration:** Acting as the primary operational liaison between the Cross-Border team and Takealot’s internal departments, facilitating seamless integration and support.
- **Performance Monitoring:** Owning the frameworks, key performance indicators (KPIs), and processes used to monitor and manage seller performance, driving continuous improvement.
- **Reporting and Analytics:** Building and maintaining the reporting infrastructure necessary to track and analyse operational performance, identifying trends and areas for enhancement.
- **Compliance:** Defining the compliance requirements specific to cross-border trade, ensuring adherence to all relevant regulations.
- **Problem Resolution:** Proactively identifying operational bottlenecks and leading initiatives to resolve them, ensuring the smooth flow of the cross-border business.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
To excel in this demanding role, candidates will need a robust background in operations, with a specific focus on cross-border commerce or marketplace environments. The ideal applicant will possess:
- A minimum of five years of relevant experience, ideally gained in cross-border commerce or marketplace operations.
- A tertiary qualification, such as a Bachelor's degree, in Commerce, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or a closely related field.
- A proven history of successfully designing and implementing operational processes that have led to measurable improvements.
- In-depth knowledge of cross-border trade intricacies, including understanding various logistics models and compliance frameworks.
- Strong analytical and data management skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and make data-driven decisions.
- Previous experience working within or closely with an e-commerce marketplace environment would be highly advantageous.
This is a significant opportunity to shape a new and vital part of Takealot's business. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in expanding the company's reach and offering a wider variety of products to South African consumers, while simultaneously empowering international businesses to tap into a thriving market.
In South Africa, operations management roles, particularly those with a cross-border and e-commerce focus, are in high demand. Such positions are often found within large retail groups, logistics providers, and growing e-commerce platforms like Takealot. While salaries can vary significantly based on experience, company size, and specific responsibilities, these roles typically offer competitive remuneration packages. The career path for an operations manager can lead to more senior leadership positions within supply chain, logistics, or general management, as well as specialisation in international trade.
