Absa is offering a valuable learnership opportunity designed to equip unemployed youth with the essential skills and practical experience needed to forge a successful career in the microinsurance and financial services sector. This programme isn't just about acquiring knowledge; it's a stepping stone to sustainable employment and professional growth, particularly for those keen to drive financial inclusion across underserved communities in KwaZulu-Natal and surrounding rural areas.
About the Programme
This learnership presents a structured pathway into the dynamic world of insurance sales. Participants will benefit from a comprehensive blend of theoretical learning and hands-on, on-the-job training within a reputable financial institution. The core objective is to develop well-rounded professionals capable of engaging with diverse client bases, understanding their needs, and providing accessible and affordable insurance solutions. Beyond just sales, the programme emphasises building trust, fostering strong client relationships, and ensuring all interactions adhere to strict regulatory and company standards. It’s an immersive experience designed to cultivate a deep understanding of the insurance lifecycle, from initial customer contact through to claims processing.
The learnership offers a practical entry point into a critical industry, focusing on developing key competencies such as sales techniques, customer engagement, and effective relationship management. Participants will gain valuable exposure to the day-to-day operations of the insurance and financial services environment, laying a solid foundation for a future career.
Key Responsibilities
As a Microinsurance Sales Consultant Learner, your responsibilities will be multifaceted, directly contributing to Absa's mission of broader financial inclusion. Your primary role will involve actively promoting and selling microinsurance products directly to individuals and within communities.
Key duties will include:
- Building and nurturing strong, trust-based relationships with clients through consistently excellent customer service.
- Assessing customer needs and recommending appropriate, affordable insurance solutions tailored to their circumstances.
- Guiding clients through the entire process, assisting with applications, addressing policy queries, and supporting them during claims.
- Ensuring strict adherence to all relevant regulatory requirements and company policies in every transaction.
- Participating in community outreach initiatives, awareness campaigns, and educational drives to promote financial literacy.
- Accurately capturing client information and meticulously maintaining detailed records of all interactions and transactions.
- Working towards achieving defined learnership performance objectives and sales targets.
- Continuously expanding your knowledge of insurance products and refining your sales methodologies.

Applicants must currently be unemployed and not enrolled in any other studies. A clean criminal and credit record is essential, as is a valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle, given the travel requirements across KZN and surrounding rural areas.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
- A natural ability to build rapport and trust rapidly with a wide range of people.
- A strong customer-centric approach with a high degree of empathy.
- Excellent attention to detail and proven administrative accuracy.
- Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
- The capacity to persuade and influence positively.
- An aptitude for quick learning and the ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a talent for engaging with community members.
- Basic computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Office and digital platforms.
Prior experience in a call centre, sales, or customer service environment, or previous exposure to the insurance or financial services sector, would be considered advantageous but is not essential. Absa values candidates who are goal-oriented, possess a strong work ethic, conduct themselves professionally and ethically, and can work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
