Job Description

This role at FNB, based in Johannesburg, offers a unique opportunity for a detail-oriented individual to play a crucial part in shaping and refining the output of the organisation's research function. You will be instrumental in ensuring that all economic and financial market research is presented with exceptional clarity, accuracy, and professionalism. This position is ideal for someone who possesses excellent editing and proofreading capabilities, a meticulous approach to their work, and a genuine interest in the complexities of economics and financial markets. The core of this role involves enhancing the quality and impact of research content, guaranteeing it meets stringent editorial standards and regulatory requirements before being disseminated across various channels.

Elevating Research Through Editorial Excellence

A significant aspect of this position involves acting as a guardian of editorial quality. You will meticulously edit and proofread a range of research outputs, including publications, presentations, and materials intended for clients. Your sharp eye for detail will ensure clarity, coherence, and factual accuracy in every piece of content. You will serve as a critical quality checkpoint, particularly for high-impact or time-sensitive research, ensuring that all work adheres to agreed-upon editorial standards before it is released to the public. A key responsibility will be to consistently uphold and apply the organisation's editorial style guidelines across all asset classes, product types, and distribution platforms, thereby maintaining a unified and professional voice.

Furthermore, you will collaborate closely with research analysts and senior stakeholders, not just to polish their written work, but to actively enhance the narrative flow of their insights. This involves a willingness to constructively challenge assumptions and identify any gaps in content or logic, ultimately strengthening the structure, readability, and overall effectiveness of research findings. The goal is to maximise client value and ensure that complex financial information is communicated in an accessible and impactful manner.

Streamlining Operations and Managing Knowledge

Beyond editorial refinement, this role encompasses vital content management and production support. You will be responsible for maintaining and organising the research content repository, ensuring that all research outputs are efficiently archived, easily retrievable, and properly version-controlled. This structured approach to documentation contributes significantly to the preservation of institutional knowledge.

Workflow management is another critical component. You will support the coordination of publishing schedules and production timelines, keeping a close watch on dependencies to ensure that research is delivered predictably and on time. By monitoring workflow progress, flagging potential risks, and facilitating communication between various contributors, you will help to reduce bottlenecks and keep the production process running smoothly. Additionally, you will be involved in maintaining and refining research templates, publishing tools, and authoring platforms, aiming to improve their usability and ensure alignment with business objectives. Identifying opportunities to enhance production efficiency through better tools and processes will be a continuous endeavour.

Ensuring compliance with governance, risk, and regulatory requirements is paramount. You will be tasked with ensuring that all research outputs comply with relevant regulations, internal policies, and approved financial services disclaimers. This includes applying appropriate review protocols to safeguard the organisation’s brand, reputation, and legal standing. A proactive approach to continuous improvement will involve tracking recurring quality issues and workflow challenges to identify root causes and recommending enhancements to the research production lifecycle.

A successful candidate will hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as Economics, Publishing, Language Practice, or Information Science, and possess at least three years of experience in editorial, research production, or content management. Experience within the financial services or research environments would be advantageous. Strong editorial, proofreading, and writing abilities are essential, alongside proficiency in content quality management and an understanding of economic and financial research terminology. Familiarity with workflow and production coordination, content management systems, publishing tools, and advanced MS Office skills is expected. Key competencies include a keen attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, the ability to constructively challenge assumptions, excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, and the capacity to manage time and prioritise effectively under pressure. A commitment to continuous improvement and professional discretion are also vital.

In South Africa, roles focused on research enablement and editorial support within financial institutions often command competitive salaries, reflecting the specialised skills and responsibilities involved. Progression can lead to positions with greater strategic oversight of content production and knowledge management, or into specialist editorial roles within larger financial groups.
