Absa is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Islamic Banking Regional Specialist to drive the growth of its Islamic Banking customer base. This pivotal role involves providing expert support for Islamic Banking solutions to a diverse range of clients, from retail customers to large corporations, all while upholding the strict Shari’ah governance framework and regulatory standards that Absa adheres to.
You will collaborate extensively with various internal Absa teams within the region. This includes departments such as Channel, Product, Segment, Risk, and the central Islamic Banking Head Office. Your mission will be to foster disciplined growth and ensure Absa's Islamic Banking proposition is effectively delivered.
About the Role
The core responsibility of the Islamic Banking Regional Specialist is to significantly increase Absa's Islamic Banking client portfolio within the designated region, working towards ambitious yet achievable targets. You will act as a primary point of contact and a trusted advisor for clients seeking to understand and utilise Islamic Banking solutions, structures, and the unique value they offer.
Your proactive approach to identifying and nurturing new business opportunities will be key. This involves managing a sales pipeline diligently, leveraging referral networks, and engaging directly with the market to attract new Islamic Banking clients. Furthermore, you will work closely with credit, risk, and operations teams to ensure that all Islamic Banking products are implemented efficiently and in full regulatory compliance. - **Shari’ah Compliance and Risk Management:** Serve as the first line of defence for Shari’ah compliance in all client interactions. Ensure all Islamic Banking products receive appropriate Shari’ah approval before marketing, structuring, or execution. Proactively identify, manage, and escalate any potential Shari’ah, conduct, credit, or reputational risks.
- **Internal Collaboration:** Partner effectively with business units across Retail, Business Banking, and Corporate Banking to integrate Islamic Banking seamlessly into mainstream client coverage strategies. Work collaboratively with Group functions, including Segments, Product, Credit, Risk, Legal, Compliance, and Operations, to facilitate end-to-end deal execution.
- **Strategic Alignment:** Ensure all regional activities align with Absa's broader Islamic Banking commercialisation strategy, Group objectives, product standards, Shari’ah governance, and balance sheet goals.
- **Stakeholder Engagement:** Engage with relevant community, industry, and institutional stakeholders to enhance Absa's presence and reputation in the Islamic Banking sector within the region.
- **Performance Management:** Achieve agreed financial and non-financial targets, encompassing customer growth, asset and deposit mobilisation, and revenue generation.
- **Reporting and Insights:** Maintain accurate and up-to-date reporting for pipelines, portfolios, and performance metrics. Provide valuable market insights and feedback to regional clients and stakeholders.
- **Policy and Regulatory Adherence:** Ensure strict compliance with all Absa policies, regulatory mandates, and the Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Framework. This includes managing and mitigating Shari’ah, credit, conduct, anti-money laundering (AML), and reputational risks.
