Job Description

This role offers an exciting opportunity for a driven individual to immerse themselves in the modernisation of payment platforms within a leading South African financial institution. You will be an integral part of the Payments Platform team, collaborating closely with a Technical Product Manager and various delivery teams to facilitate the transition to a new target architecture. This position is ideal for someone keen to gain in-depth technical and product expertise in the dynamic payments landscape, with a clear path towards more senior leadership responsibilities.

About the role

The core of this position involves actively supporting the delivery of enhanced payment capabilities. You will assist in shaping and prioritising features essential for modernisation initiatives, which could include the implementation of robust API frameworks, the development of real-time payment processing, ensuring readiness for ISO 20022 standards, and the strategic decoupling of legacy systems. Your involvement will extend to actively participating in Agile ceremonies such as backlog grooming and sprint planning, contributing to the incremental delivery of modern payment components.

Furthermore, you will play a crucial role in gathering and analysing the diverse needs of the business, operations, and technology stakeholders. This involves documenting requirements for modernisation efforts, such as data mapping for richer standards and integrations with new payment rails. Translating these complex needs into clear, actionable specifications for the engineering teams will be paramount.

Key Responsibilities

This role requires a proactive approach to platform monitoring and support. You will be responsible for tracking key performance indicators related to platform health, transaction success rates, and operational objectives. A significant part of your work will involve assisting in the investigation and resolution of production issues, working collaboratively with engineering, operations, and support functions. Reporting on metrics for both the existing legacy systems and the new modern environments, including transaction success, uptime, migration progress, and cost implications, will be a regular duty. You’ll also provide crucial support during phased rollouts and system cutovers to ensure a smooth transition.

Documentation and knowledge management are also key responsibilities. You will maintain and update essential capability documentation, encompassing process flows, API specifications, migration guides, capability matrices, and transition playbooks. Contributing to a culture of knowledge sharing across different teams will be vital for collective success.

Your involvement will extend to testing and validation activities. This includes supporting User Acceptance Testing (UAT), regression testing, and general validation for modernisation releases, such as new APIs, real-time payment flows, and security enhancements like tokenisation. Ensuring that all releases meet stringent quality, compliance, performance, and stability standards across both old and new systems is a critical aspect of the role.

Effective stakeholder coordination is also expected. You will serve as a primary point of contact for day-to-day queries from operations, compliance, risk, and business teams, acting as a facilitator for seamless communication between product, engineering, and support functions. Staying abreast of market trends in payment modernisation, such as cloud-native design, the benefits of ISO 20022, real-time payment rails, and fraud prevention for instant payments, will be encouraged, providing basic insights to inform strategic discussions. You'll also identify opportunities to improve platform usability, efficiency, and compliance, and actively participate in retrospectives and process optimisation initiatives, driving continuous improvement within the evolving payment ecosystem.

What they're looking for

To be considered for this role, a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Business, Finance, Computer Science, Information Systems, or Economics is preferred. Candidates should possess at least two years of experience within the fintech, banking, or payments sector. Previous experience in product support, business analysis, operations, or a technical/analytical role, with exposure to payment system projects (even in legacy support or early modernisation phases), would be highly advantageous.

Essential technical skills include familiarity with SQL, data analysis tools, or basic API testing capabilities. A foundational understanding of payment flows, the distinctions between legacy and modern architectures (e.g., API-first vs. older batch systems, real-time processing), and standards like ISO 20022 is also required. Experience with Agile project management tools such as Jira and Confluence would be beneficial.

This position offers a fantastic platform for career growth within the financial services sector in South Africa. Roles like this, focusing on product specialisation and platform modernisation, are highly sought after. While specific remuneration is not stated, the skills and experience gained are valuable and can lead to competitive salaries and further opportunities in product management, technical leadership, or strategic roles within large banking groups and fintech firms. Continuous learning about evolving payment technologies and regulatory changes will be key to long-term success in this field.
