Job Description

If you're a qualified HVAC Artisan Technician seeking a dynamic role within a leading South African financial institution, FNB, a member of the FirstRand Group, has an opportunity waiting in Johannesburg. This position is integral to supporting the smooth operation of FNB's extensive facilities, ensuring that all building systems function optimally. The company fosters an environment for adaptable individuals, encouraging curiosity and providing a platform for experts to collaborate and drive meaningful change.

About the Role

This role is centred on proactive and reactive maintenance, ensuring the continuous and efficient operation of HVAC systems across FNB's property portfolio. As an HVAC Artisan Technician, you will be a key player in maintaining the building infrastructure, contributing to operational excellence and cost efficiency. Your responsibilities will extend to identifying and mitigating potential risks that could impact operational costs, such as high energy consumption or equipment failures. A core aspect of the job involves meticulous cost management, ensuring that all labour and material expenses for work orders are accurately estimated and kept within budget, while also negotiating competitive prices for necessary equipment and supplies.

Your commitment to exceptional service will be paramount, as you'll be responding to client and technical queries with speed and accuracy, delivering high-quality resolutions. The nature of facilities management often requires flexibility, and this role includes participating in a 24-hour standby roster to address any urgent emergencies that may arise. You will need to engage with both internal and external stakeholders with professionalism, demonstrating diplomacy and tact at all times.

Key Responsibilities

The day-to-day activities of an HVAC Artisan Technician at FNB will involve a comprehensive range of tasks aimed at maintaining and improving HVAC systems:

  • **Routine Maintenance and Repair:** Conduct regular inspections, troubleshooting, and necessary repairs on all HVAC equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • **System Troubleshooting and Repair:** Diagnose and fix issues within electrical circuits, and be prepared to coordinate emergency repairs and manage larger, more complex repair projects.
  • **Installation:** Install new HVAC equipment and systems, aligning with new building projects or renovation plans.
  • **Technical Interpretation:** Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and work orders to guide your own work and to provide clear instructions to colleagues or contractors.
  • **Administrative Duties:** Ensure efficient administration by accurately planning, reporting, and updating all relevant maintenance information.
  • **Compliance:** Strictly adhere to Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) standards, relevant SANS building codes, and energy efficiency regulations.
  • **Collaboration:** Work effectively with other tradespeople, such as electricians, plumbers, and carpenters, to support integrated facilities management initiatives.
  • **Preventative Maintenance:** Contribute to the development of preventative maintenance schedules designed to minimise recurring equipment faults.
  • **Resource Management:** Responsibly manage tools, equipment, and materials, keeping a close eye on cost control.

What They're Looking For

To excel in this position, a strong technical foundation combined with practical experience and excellent interpersonal skills is essential. FNB is looking for individuals who possess:

  • **Formal Qualifications:** A recognised Trade Test Certificate in HVAC/Refrigeration (Artisan qualification), including a trade qualification and a passed Trade Test. An apprenticeship background is also a key requirement.
  • **Experience:** A minimum of 3 to 5 years of proven experience in HVAC maintenance and installations, ideally within commercial or corporate settings.
  • **Technical Knowledge:** A solid understanding of HVAC systems, refrigeration cycles, and ventilation layouts. Proficiency in using hand and power tools, as well as digital control systems.
  • **System Familiarity:** Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS), energy-efficient solutions, and chilled water systems would be a significant advantage. Familiarity with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and basic business software like MS Office is also expected.
  • **Driving Licence:** A valid vehicle licence is beneficial, particularly for standby duties, and a valid driver's licence is advantageous for general site mobility.
  • **Key Skills:**
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical capabilities for diagnosing faults.
  • Proactive planning and organisational skills for scheduled maintenance.
  • A high level of customer focus and professional communication.
  • Resilience under stress, reliability, discipline, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent technical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good communication skills for effective liaison with various stakeholders.
  • A keen attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality workmanship.
  • Effective time management and prioritisation skills.
  • A safety-conscious mindset and strict adherence to OHS standards.

This role offers opportunities for professional networking, collaborative work, and challenging projects that encourage innovation. FNB values candidates who are curious, courageous, and driven by mastery, constantly seeking to learn and improve.
