Job Description
This role is a pivotal opportunity within FNB's Global Markets division, specifically focusing on the Digital Pricing and Market Making (DPMM) technology ecosystem. The successful candidate will steer the strategic technological direction, oversee the delivery and ongoing enhancement, and manage the operational aspects of critical electronic trading platforms. These platforms are central to the bank's capabilities across various financial markets, including Foreign Exchange (FX), Fixed Income, Money Markets, Commodities, and Equities.
About the Role
The core responsibility of the Technology Platform Lead is to ensure the resilience, operational excellence, and continuous delivery of business value for the DPMM technology landscape. This involves a delicate balance between maintaining existing systems ("run-the-bank") and driving innovation and development for future needs ("change-the-bank"). The role requires close collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders, including Trading, Sales, Product, Risk, and other Technology teams. By fostering strong partnerships, the lead will ensure the platforms effectively support competitive pricing, execution, risk management, and market-making activities, ultimately driving business growth and client value. Reporting to the Head of Electronic Trading Technology, the incumbent will be accountable for all platform delivery commitments, sustainability, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership.
Key Responsibilities
The Technology Platform Lead will be instrumental in shaping the future of electronic trading at FNB. Key responsibilities include:
- **Team Leadership:** Building, mentoring, and leading a high-performing, multidisciplinary team comprising functional and technical specialists, Java developers, DevOps engineers, and subject matter experts. This involves fostering a collaborative environment that embraces Agile and DevSecOps principles.
- **Strategic Planning:** Defining and executing the technology strategy and roadmap for the DPMM platforms in close partnership with business stakeholders. This includes owning platform roadmaps, release plans, and prioritisation processes, aligning technology efforts with business value.
- **Delivery and Operations:** Managing the end-to-end delivery and operational management of mission-critical electronic trading platforms. This encompasses driving platform resilience, scalability, automation, and observability to ensure systems are robust and efficient.
- **Stakeholder Engagement:** Partnering closely with Product, Trading, and Business stakeholders to understand their needs and translate them into technological solutions that enable growth, efficiency, and innovation. This also involves managing relationships with external vendors, service providers, and strategic technology partners.
- **Governance and Risk Management:** Ensuring appropriate platform governance, risk management frameworks, and operational controls are in place. This includes establishing effective operational support models and technical monitoring frameworks.
- **Incident Management:** Leading major incident management processes, coordinating timely resolutions for production issues, and driving root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
- **Continuous Improvement:** Proactively identifying opportunities to enhance platform quality, performance, and operational efficiency, ensuring systems remain fit for purpose and capable of supporting future business expansion.
- **Technical Oversight:** Providing leadership across architecture, delivery, platform capability, operational support, and technology modernisation initiatives.
What They're Looking For
The ideal candidate will possess a strong blend of technical acumen, leadership experience, and a deep understanding of financial markets. Essential qualifications and experience include:
- A graduate degree in Computer Science, Mathematical Finance, Engineering, or a related Technology field. A combination of these qualifications would be advantageous.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in various technical management roles, with a preference for experience within a Global Markets or Banking environment.
- A solid understanding of multiple asset classes, financial markets products, and how they are priced and executed.
- Proven experience in electronic trading, exchange market structure, algorithmic trading, and market-making technologies.
- Familiarity with technologies such as Java (specifically low-latency aspects like 0 GC), C++ (low latency and complexity), co-location strategies, FIX Protocol, and integration/connectivity architectures.
- A good understanding of Agile methodologies and project/programme management principles.
- Demonstrated strong stakeholder management and networking skills.
- Experience in managing vendor and third-party technology relationships.
- A proven track record of delivering projects successfully, achieving production excellence, and effectively managing teams.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to make decisive actions.
- Excellent planning, organisation, communication (verbal and written), and presentation skills.
- The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
- A collaborative mindset, a broad and long-term perspective, and a strategic approach to designing solutions that promote standardisation and efficiency.
