Job Description

Absa is seeking an energetic and knowledgeable individual to champion its Islamic Banking offering in the Polokwane region. This pivotal role is designed to expand the bank's footprint in this growing sector by fostering new client relationships and providing expert support across various client segments. You will be instrumental in driving the adoption and successful implementation of Shari'ah-compliant financial solutions, ensuring strict adherence to both Absa's governance framework and all pertinent regulatory requirements.

This position requires a proactive approach, working collaboratively with a wide array of internal Absa teams. These include colleagues in channel management, product development, segment strategy, risk management, and the central Islamic Banking head office. The primary objective is to achieve ambitious growth targets for Islamic Banking customers within the designated region, contributing to Absa's overall strategic aims.

Key Responsibilities

As the Islamic Banking Regional Specialist, your responsibilities will be diverse and impactful. You will be tasked with actively growing the Islamic Banking client base by identifying and pursuing opportunities across retail, business, and corporate banking segments. A key aspect of the role involves acting as a trusted advisor to clients, offering comprehensive support on Islamic Banking solutions, unique structures, and their associated value propositions.

Your day-to-day activities will include:

  • **Client Acquisition:** Proactively managing a sales pipeline, generating referrals, and engaging with the market to secure new Islamic Banking clients.
  • **Service Excellence:** Upholding rigorous standards for client service, ensuring prompt responsiveness and disciplined execution of transactions.
  • **Risk and Compliance:** Collaborating closely with credit, risk, and operations teams to ensure all Islamic Banking products are delivered efficiently and in full compliance.
  • **Education and Awareness:** Playing a crucial role in educating clients and stakeholders about the principles and advantages of Islamic Finance.
  • **Shari’ah Governance:** Serving as the primary point of contact for Shari’ah compliance within client engagements in your region, ensuring all transactions meet Shari’ah approval before execution.
  • **Risk Management:** Identifying, managing, and escalating any potential Shari’ah, conduct, credit, or reputational risks in a timely manner.
  • **Business Integration:** Partnering with various business units to effectively embed Islamic Banking into their mainstream client engagement strategies.
  • **Strategic Alignment:** Working in tandem with the Absa Islamic Banking commercialisation strategy to ensure consistency with group-wide objectives, product standards, Shari’ah governance, and balance sheet goals.
  • **Reporting and Insights:** Maintaining accurate records of your pipeline, portfolio, and performance, and providing valuable market insights to support stakeholders.

What We're Looking For

To excel in this role, you will need a solid foundation in sales within the banking sector coupled with demonstrable experience and a keen understanding of Islamic Banking products and principles. A strong grasp of credit processes, risk management frameworks, and general banking products is essential.

Key qualifications and experience include:

  • **Educational Background:** A Grade 12 certificate is a minimum requirement. While a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business, or Management Studies is preferred, advanced diplomas or certifications in Banking will also be considered.
  • **Islamic Finance Expertise:** A recognisable qualification in Islamic Finance (such as IFQ, CIFP, or an AAOIFI-aligned certification) is highly advantageous.
  • **Sales Acumen:** 3-5 years of sales experience within a banking environment.
  • **Islamic Banking Exposure:** Proven experience and a thorough understanding of Islamic Banking or Islamic finance products.
  • **Banking Knowledge:** A strong understanding of credit processes, risk management, and a broad range of banking products.
  • **Compliance Mindset:** Commitment to upholding Absa policies, regulatory mandates, and the Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Framework.

In South Africa, specialists in Islamic finance often find opportunities within larger banking institutions that have dedicated Islamic banking divisions or windows. Roles like this are typically found in major financial hubs, but given Absa's regional focus, Polokwane presents an exciting growth area. Progression often involves moving into senior sales, relationship management, or product management roles within the Islamic finance space, potentially leading to regional leadership positions. Salary expectations for such specialized roles can vary significantly based on experience and the specific employer, but they generally command competitive remuneration packages, reflecting the niche expertise required.
