Job Description

Absa is seeking a seasoned professional to lead and embed their Employee Relations (ER) strategy across the Pan-Africa Business Unit. This pivotal role ensures that ER practices align with the group's overarching frameworks, governance principles, and risk appetite, while also translating enterprise-wide direction into actionable local practices. The successful candidate will serve as a key advisor to leadership, championing ethical, consistent, and defensible ER approaches that not only mitigate people-related risks but also bolster business performance and stability across the African continent.

Strategic ER Leadership in a Pan-African Context

The core of this position involves the strategic execution and integration of the Employee Relations function across multiple African markets. This means translating Absa's group ER strategy into practical, context-specific applications within the Pan-Africa Business Unit. It requires a deep understanding of diverse regulatory environments and labour landscapes across the continent, ensuring that implemented frameworks, policies, and operational models are not only consistent with enterprise standards but also adaptable to local nuances.

A significant aspect of the role is the oversight of governance, risk, and compliance within ER for the region. This includes identifying, assessing, and actively managing employee relations risks that could have substantial financial, reputational, or regulatory implications. The Head of Employee Relations will work closely with Pan-Africa BU leadership, Legal, Risk, and Compliance departments to facilitate informed decision-making and robust risk mitigation strategies. This collaborative approach is essential for maintaining the ethical integrity and legal defensibility of all ER practices.

Managing Complex ER Matters and Driving Insights

A key accountability is the oversight and quality assurance of complex, high-risk, and sensitive ER cases across the Pan-Africa BU. This includes intervening in matters that demand neutrality, senior judgment, and a deep understanding of potential precedent or reputational risks. The role requires ensuring that all such cases are handled in strict adherence to group standards and applicable laws, with appropriate escalation to Group ER for matters carrying enterprise-level implications or significant regulatory exposure.

Furthermore, the Head of Employee Relations will leverage ER data and trends to inform proactive interventions and continuous improvement initiatives. By analysing ER outcomes, the individual will contribute valuable insights to the Group ER team, aiding in the refinement of enterprise-level strategies. A strong emphasis is placed on driving preventative ER measures within the BU to address the root causes of workplace disputes and foster a positive organisational culture. This includes building and enhancing ER capabilities within the regional Human Capital team, providing coaching and professional leadership to ER practitioners and HC stakeholders.

To excel in this role, candidates should possess a postgraduate degree (Honours, Postgraduate Diploma, or relevant professional qualification at NQF Level 8) in fields such as Human Resources, Labour Relations, Industrial Psychology, Employment Law, or Governance. A minimum of 12-15 years of experience in employee relations or a related HC discipline is required, with proven success in navigating complex ER matters within large organisations. Essential experience includes implementing enterprise frameworks across business units and demonstrating a track record of leading ER functions across diverse geographic markets. Experience in non-banking sectors like FinTech, Telecoms, FMCG, or Tech is considered advantageous. Strong skills in strategic application of ER frameworks, stakeholder advisory, analytical problem-solving, policy interpretation, conflict resolution, and capability building are paramount.

In South Africa, senior Employee Relations roles like this, particularly those with a Pan-African scope in a large financial institution, typically command competitive remuneration packages. The specific Rand amount can vary significantly based on the exact scope of responsibilities, the number of markets managed, and the overall seniority of the role within the organisation. Such positions are often found within major banks, established financial services groups, and large multinational corporations operating in South Africa and across the continent. Career progression typically involves moving into broader HR leadership roles, potentially overseeing multiple regions or global functions, or specialising further in areas like executive coaching, organisational development, or risk management.
