Job Description
This role sits within the Private Banking division of one of South Africa’s most established financial institutions. The position is designed for a dedicated professional who thrives on building long-term, high-value connections with affluent clients. You will be responsible for managing a dedicated portfolio, ensuring that every interaction delivers meaningful financial value while aligning with the bank’s broader profitability goals.
About the role
As a Relationship Banker, you will act as the primary point of contact for a select group of clients. Your focus is to move beyond transactional banking by adopting a proactive, consultative approach. Success in this role is measured by your ability to deepen existing client relationships, provide bespoke financial guidance, and ensure that clients are matched with the most appropriate banking, lending, and wealth management solutions available.
You will be the face of the brand for your portfolio, requiring a high degree of professional maturity and the ability to navigate complex client needs. Beyond pure sales, you are tasked with maintaining rigorous administrative and risk management standards. This includes overseeing credit applications, conducting annual reviews, and ensuring that all client activity complies with the necessary regulatory frameworks, including FAIS requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Your daily schedule will balance active business development with meticulous portfolio maintenance. You will play a pivotal role in the client lifecycle, from onboarding and identifying new opportunities to ensuring the long-term retention of your base.
Your core responsibilities will include:
- Driving portfolio growth by actively identifying and converting cross-selling opportunities across the bank’s ecosystem.
- Conducting in-depth financial assessments to recommend tailored banking and wealth products that suit the client's life stage and financial goals.
- Managing the end-to-end credit application process, including preparing quality documentation for annual credit reviews.
- Championing digital adoption among clients to ensure they can manage their accounts efficiently while you focus on high-level advisory work.
- Acting as an escalation point for complex client queries and complaints, ensuring that all interactions maintain the premium service levels expected of the Signature brand.
- Strictly adhering to internal risk management protocols and external regulatory compliance to protect both the bank and the client.
What they're looking for
The successful candidate should hold a relevant NQF 7 qualification, such as a Bachelor of Commerce, an Advanced Diploma, or a similar degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business. Because this is a regulated environment, being FAIS-compliant is a non-negotiable requirement.
In terms of experience, the bank is looking for individuals who have spent 2 to 4 years working within the financial services sector, specifically dealing with affluent or relationship-managed portfolios. You need a proven track record of balancing sales targets with technical credit acumen.
Key competencies include:
- **Financial and Commercial Acumen:** The ability to interpret complex data and translate it into actionable advice for clients.
- **Relationship Management:** A natural ability to build rapport, communicate with confidence, and influence decision-making.
- **Problem Solving:** A proactive mindset for seizing opportunities and a methodical approach to identifying and reporting risks.
In the South African financial services landscape, Relationship Banker roles within Private Banking are highly sought after, offering a clear growth path toward senior portfolio management, wealth planning, or specialised credit management. Compensation packages for these roles typically include a competitive base salary supplemented by performance-based incentives, often ranging significantly depending on the size and complexity of the client portfolio managed. Candidates with a strong existing network and a solid understanding of local wealth management products often find that this role serves as an excellent career multiplier.
