Job Description

At Absa, a leading African financial institution with a legacy spanning over a century, a significant opportunity exists for a seasoned Business Process Engineer. This role is central to the bank's ongoing commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and fostering innovation across its diverse business units. If you are passionate about optimising workflows, driving improvements, and contributing to the strategic direction of a major financial player, this position in Johannesburg offers a compelling career path.

About the Role

As a Business Process Engineer at Absa, your primary responsibility will be to establish and maintain a comprehensive, centralised repository for all process-related documentation. This includes procedures, templates, and forms, ensuring consistency and accessibility across the organisation. You will act as a crucial link between various business and product owners, delving deep into their operational needs. This involves meticulously analysing existing (“as-is”) processes, identifying gaps, and formulating actionable suggestions for improvement. The ultimate goal is to design optimised, future-state (“to-be”) processes that align with Absa's strategic objectives and enhance customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

This dynamic role demands a proactive approach to identifying and implementing business improvements and efficiencies. Drawing insights from market research, competitor analysis, and direct customer feedback, you will spearhead initiatives that drive tangible results. A key aspect of your contribution will be the development of robust business cases, supported by detailed projections of financial and non-financial benefits. Crucially, you will monitor and report on these benefits post-implementation, demonstrating the value of your engineered solutions.

Your day-to-day activities will involve:

  • Investigating and implementing process improvements and efficiencies informed by market trends, competitor insights, and customer needs.
  • Developing compelling business cases for proposed process changes and tracking their financial and non-financial benefits post-implementation.
  • Creating and managing a central repository for all process documentation, including procedures, templates, and forms.
  • Gaining a holistic understanding of end-to-end processes within specific business areas to pinpoint bottlenecks, risks, and opportunities for enhancement.
  • Building and nurturing strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders to thoroughly understand their business requirements.
  • Executing process improvement projects, taking ownership for the quality, scope, and timely delivery of your contributions.
  • Evaluating existing business processes, identifying areas for enhancement, and redesigning them for optimal performance.
  • Continuously striving for process improvement and elevating the quality and consistency of business processes and methodologies across Absa’s operational landscape.

What They're Looking For

To excel in this role, candidates will need a strong foundation in engineering principles and a proven track record in business process optimisation. A National Diploma in Engineering or an equivalent NQF Level 6 qualification is the minimum educational requirement. Crucially, you should possess at least five years of dedicated experience as a Business Process Engineer.

Essential expertise includes:

  • A solid understanding of various Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) methodologies and tools, such as Lean Six Sigma and Design Thinking.
  • Proficiency in using Business Process Modelling tools.
  • A minimum of three to five years of experience within the banking, technology, or financial services sector.

While not mandatory, a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering or an equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification would be advantageous. Furthermore, candidates with eight years of Business Process Engineering experience, Lean Six Sigma certification, or familiarity with the iServer Modelling platform, coupled with five to eight years of experience in the banking, technology, or financial services environment, will be highly regarded.

Absa is committed to fostering an equitable and diverse workforce, adhering to the Employment Equity Act.
