Job Description
An exciting opportunity exists within FNB in Johannesburg for a skilled Data Modeller. This role is central to ensuring the organisation's data systems effectively support business needs and strategic objectives. The successful candidate will play a vital part in designing and implementing robust data models, contributing to sound decision-making and the efficient operation of information systems across the bank.
About the Role
The Data Modeller will be responsible for providing expert advice and support in the field of data modelling. This includes executing established data modelling standards, principles, frameworks, and tools. Under appropriate guidance, you will be tasked with designing and developing both logical and physical data models and databases. These models will need to accurately reflect and serve the organisation's information systems and critical business requirements, ensuring data integrity and usability. A key aspect of the role involves coordinating and prioritising data modelling efforts within specific business areas.
You will be expected to design and implement data modelling solutions that encompass a variety of database technologies, including relational, dimensional, and NoSQL databases. Furthermore, you will develop and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models as required by various South African Reserve Bank (SARB) business units, supporting both project-specific needs and ongoing business operations. A focus will be placed on identifying and adopting an enterprise data model as a standard for all data model designs, leveraging best practices and accelerating modelling efforts.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this Data Modeller position are diverse and demand a proactive approach. You will be instrumental in monitoring, measuring, and reporting on the quality of data modelling and data development activities, ensuring that data models accurately capture business requirements. This includes amending data model designs and updating data entities and objects as business processes evolve. A technical requirement involves performing reverse engineering of physical data models from existing databases and SQL scripts, ensuring comprehensive coverage of entities necessary to meet business demands.
Building and maintaining effective stakeholder relations is crucial for promoting data modelling awareness throughout the organisation and supporting reliable decision-making processes. You will also be responsible for delivering test scripts for data models and overseeing their journey through to implementation. The role requires the conscientious development of all necessary supporting documentation related to data modelling and the creation of reports detailing data modelling activities. Furthermore, a forward-thinking aspect of the role involves driving the automation of data modelling management processes and functions to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
What They're Looking For
To be considered for this role, candidates should possess a relevant Bachelor's qualification. You will need a minimum of four to five years of experience in a data-focused environment, with substantial hands-on experience in relational, dimensional, and analytical modelling. Essential knowledge includes working with data warehouses, data lakes, and enterprise big data platforms, particularly in multi-data-centre contexts.
Proven experience in modelling end-to-end payment lifecycles, encompassing clearing, settlement, and reconciliation processes, is a significant advantage. Familiarity with payment systems like Swift and ISO20022 is highly desirable. A strong understanding of logical data modelling and the application of industry-standard data models (such as those from IBM or Teradata) is required. Experience with dimensional data modelling, specifically using the Kimball methodology, and an understanding of the Inmon methodology are also key.
Previous experience developing data models within the banking sector, with a specific emphasis on payment systems, will be highly regarded. You should possess a solid understanding and practical experience in implementing various data management domains and technologies, including metadata management, data quality and profiling, and information architecture.
This role offers an excellent opportunity for a seasoned Data Modeller to contribute to a leading financial institution. In South Africa, the compensation for a Data Modeller with this level of experience can range considerably depending on the employer and specific responsibilities, but typically falls within the R500,000 to R800,000 per annum range, and potentially higher for specialised expertise. FNB, as part of the FirstRand Group, is committed to employment equity and supporting the advancement of individuals with disabilities. Growth paths in such roles often lead to senior data architect positions or specialised data governance roles.
