Job Description

This learnership offers a significant opportunity for unemployed young people in Gauteng to gain valuable experience and launch a career in the vital microinsurance sector. Absa is seeking motivated individuals to join their team as Microinsurance Sales Consultant Learners, with a mission to expand financial inclusion by bringing accessible and affordable insurance solutions to underserved communities. This programme is designed not just as a training course, but as a springboard for sustainable employment and long-term career development within the financial services industry.

About the Programme

The core objective of this learnership is to equip participants with the essential practical skills, in-depth knowledge, and hands-on experience needed to excel as a Microinsurance Sales Consultant. It provides a structured pathway that combines formal theoretical learning with practical on-the-job training, immersing learners in the dynamic world of insurance and broader financial services. Participants will develop crucial competencies in sales, customer engagement, relationship management, and crucially, compliance with industry regulations. This comprehensive development aims to prepare learners for a future in sales roles within the insurance landscape.

More than just a qualification, this initiative emphasises building trust with clients and delivering exceptional customer service throughout the entire insurance lifecycle. It’s about understanding customer needs, recommending appropriate and affordable solutions, and supporting them through applications, queries, and claims.

Key Responsibilities

As a Microinsurance Sales Consultant Learner, your responsibilities will be diverse and customer-focused. You will be instrumental in promoting and selling microinsurance products directly to individuals and communities. A key part of your role will involve building and maintaining strong client relationships through consistent, empathetic, and high-quality customer service.

Your daily activities will include:

  • Assisting clients in identifying and selecting suitable, affordable insurance options.
  • Guiding clients through the application process, addressing policy queries, and supporting them with claims.
  • Ensuring all your sales activities and client interactions adhere strictly to regulatory requirements and company policies.
  • Participating actively in community outreach programmes and educational initiatives to raise awareness about insurance.
  • Accurately capturing client information and maintaining meticulous records of all interactions and transactions.
  • Meeting established learnership performance metrics and sales targets.
  • Committing to continuous learning to enhance your product knowledge and refine your sales techniques.

This role requires you to be mobile, as travel within Gauteng and potentially KwaZulu-Natal will be a necessary component of the job.

What They're Looking For

Absa is seeking candidates who demonstrate a natural ability to build trust, particularly with diverse customer groups and community members. A strong foundation in customer service, coupled with a genuine sense of empathy, is considered paramount. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, ensuring administrative accuracy in all their work.

Essential requirements for this learnership include:

  • A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.
  • A Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Business or a related field.
  • Currently unemployed and not enrolled in any other studies.
  • A clear criminal record and a clean credit history.
  • A valid driver's licence and reliable access to a vehicle.
  • A willingness to undertake travel as required by the role.

While not mandatory, having previous experience in a call centre environment, exposure to sales or customer service roles, or prior involvement in the insurance or financial services sector would be advantageous.

The ideal candidate will also possess strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication abilities, and persuasive influencing skills. They should be quick learners, adaptable to a fast-paced environment, and possess good computer literacy, including familiarity with MS Office and other digital platforms. Moreover, a self-motivated and resilient attitude, a goal-oriented mindset, strong work ethic, professional conduct, and a passion for helping others and making a social impact are highly valued attributes. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team setting is also important.

This learnership represents an excellent entry point into the financial services sector in South Africa, offering practical experience, accredited training, and mentorship. Roles like this, focused on microinsurance sales, often cater to individuals looking to build foundational sales experience. While specific learnership stipends vary, graduates often progress into permanent sales or client service roles within the insurance or broader banking industry. Opportunities for further development and specialization within Absa or other financial institutions are common for those who perform well.
