Job Description

Getlabs is currently expanding its footprint within the diagnostics sector, focusing on bringing laboratory services directly to the patient's doorstep. As a platform that facilitates the collection of vital signs and laboratory samples in home environments, they are looking for a Field Phlebotomy Supervisor to help maintain high operational standards. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and possesses both the technical clinical background and the management experience necessary to lead a team of mobile practitioners.

About the role

The primary mandate of this position is to act as a bridge between the Operations Manager and the mobile phlebotomy team. You will be tasked with maintaining quality control across specific geographical territories to ensure that every patient interaction reflects the company's commitment to service excellence. Because the role operates in a high-growth startup environment, you will need to be adaptable and resourceful, capable of handling operational shifts as the business scales. You will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of phlebotomists, ensuring they adhere to safety protocols, compliance standards, and internal processes while operating out in the field.

What you’ll do

This is a multi-faceted position that balances hands-on staff development with administrative management. You will be the primary point of contact for your team, supporting them through the following core responsibilities:

  • **Team Leadership:** Oversee a team of mobile phlebotomists across one or more regions, managing their performance and providing consistent feedback.
  • **Operational Compliance:** Conduct regular appointment reviews to ensure safety and quality standards are being met during patient visits.
  • **Human Resources Support:** Manage the end-to-end employee lifecycle, including interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and completing both new-hire and annual competency assessments.
  • **Scheduling and Budgeting:** Handle staff rostering, approve timecards and expense reports, and play an active role in planning and monitoring regional budgets.
  • **Escalation Management:** Serve as a supervisor-level contact for complex customer service issues, ensuring that any grievances or operational hurdles are resolved quickly.
  • **Performance Management:** Handle staff concerns, grievances, and disciplinary actions where necessary.

What they’re looking for

To be considered for this role, you must be a qualified phlebotomy professional with a proven track record in leadership. The company values candidates who can work independently and navigate the ambiguity inherent in a startup culture.

  • **Experience:** A minimum of two years in a formal leadership or supervisory position.
  • **Certification:** You must hold a valid phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency.
  • **Technical Skills:** Proficiency in Google Workspace tools is essential for maintaining records and managing administrative tasks.
  • **Communication:** Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to handle staff, patient inquiries, and cross-functional management.
  • **Logistics:** A clean driving record and reliable personal transport are non-negotiable, as the role requires oversight of mobile operations.

In the South African medical context, a role of this nature—combining clinical oversight with regional operations—often commands a competitive package, typically ranging from R350,000 to R550,000 per annum depending on the scale of the region managed. Positions like this are frequently found within private laboratory groups, mobile nursing agencies, or expanding digital health startups. This career path is highly beneficial for those looking to move out of bedside or laboratory-bound clinical work and into the healthcare management and logistics sector, where experience in resource allocation and staff retention is highly valued.
