About the Role

Liberty, a prominent South African financial services group, is seeking an Investment Banking Analyst to join their Advisory team in Johannesburg. This role is instrumental in supporting the origination, structuring, and execution of advisory transactions. The analyst will operate under supervision, gaining exposure to the full spectrum of the Investment Banking Advisory product portfolio. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the growth of the Advisory business while adhering strictly to defined Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) risk parameters and all relevant regulatory requirements. This is an opportunity to develop expertise within a dynamic and crucial area of financial services.

Key Responsibilities

The Investment Banking Analyst will be involved in a range of activities crucial to successful advisory deal-making. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in the origination phase of new advisory mandates, which may involve market research, identifying potential clients, and understanding their strategic objectives.
  • Supporting the structuring of transactions, which requires a keen understanding of financial instruments, corporate finance principles, and deal mechanics.
  • Contributing to the execution of advisory mandates, ensuring all steps are managed efficiently and effectively.
  • Conducting in-depth financial analysis, including company valuations, financial modelling, and scenario planning, to support transaction recommendations.
  • Preparing comprehensive client presentations, pitch books, and other transaction-related documentation.
  • Performing due diligence activities to assess risks and opportunities associated with potential transactions.
  • Collaborating closely with senior bankers and other stakeholders, both internally and externally, to achieve transaction objectives.
  • Ensuring all activities are compliant with internal risk policies and external regulatory frameworks.

What They're Looking For

To excel in this role, candidates should possess a strong foundational understanding of investment banking principles and a proactive approach to learning and development. Essential qualifications and competencies include:

  • A relevant first-degree qualification in Business, Commerce, or a related field.
  • 1-2 years of prior experience in Investment Banking Advisory roles is highly advantageous.
  • General banking experience would also be considered beneficial.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate information clearly and concisely.
  • Proficiency in documenting facts and maintaining meticulous records.
  • The ability to work effectively within a team environment and collaborate with colleagues.
  • A proactive attitude towards taking action and meeting deadlines.
  • A solid understanding of business principles, client needs, and deal negotiation dynamics.
  • Awareness of industry trends and international market knowledge is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage tasks, produce high-quality output, and uphold professional standards.
  • A capacity for checking details and interpreting data accurately.
