Job Description

Edconic is seeking a dedicated Front-End Developer to become an integral part of their lean web team. This is a fully remote position that offers a rare opportunity to move away from rigid, corporate red tape and into a space where individual ownership and technical craftsmanship are highly valued. As part of a two-person development team, you will report directly to the lead developer, ensuring that your contributions have a tangible impact on the organisation’s digital footprint.

The company operates within the experiential education sector, managing a diverse portfolio of digital properties for high-profile global brands. Because the team oversees everything from major school websites to targeted landing pages and email marketing campaigns, your day-to-day work will be varied and fast-paced. If you enjoy the challenge of balancing brand identity with high-performance code, this role offers the autonomy to shape the team’s technical workflow and standards.

About the role

This position is designed for a developer who appreciates the "craft" of web development. Edconic is currently in a transition phase, actively modernising their technical stack. You will play a key role in moving existing sites toward a standardized, block-based WordPress architecture while maintaining high performance and readability in the codebase. Because the team is small, there is very little process overhead; instead, you will be expected to work collaboratively with designers, IT, and MarTech to ensure that technical implementations are both feasible and pixel-perfect.

What you’ll do

You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of front-end components across a range of digital assets. Your core responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining public-facing websites, micro-sites, and campaign-specific landing pages.
  • Translating UX/UI designs into responsive, high-performance web pages that strictly adhere to specific brand guidelines.
  • Building and managing custom WordPress themes, moving seamlessly between modern block-based builds and legacy classic themes.
  • Collaborating on the development of team coding standards, tooling improvements, and migrating legacy sites to a more modern infrastructure.
  • Coding, testing, and troubleshooting HTML email templates.
  • Staying ahead of industry trends and proposing technical solutions that add genuine value to the user experience.

What they’re looking for

To succeed in this role, you should have at least four years of professional experience in front-end development. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a WordPress-heavy environment and will have a solid grasp of both the logic and the aesthetics of web building. Required skills include:

  • Advanced proficiency in semantic HTML, CSS (including Sass), JavaScript, and PHP.
  • Demonstrable experience building custom WordPress themes from scratch, utilizing PHP templates and Advanced Custom Fields (ACF).
  • Strong collaborative skills with a comfort level for Git/GitHub workflows, including managing pull requests and participating in code reviews.
  • A keen eye for detail, particularly regarding responsive design and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Excellent communication skills, essential for a remote team where clarity in documentation and updates is vital.

For a South African developer, this role offers the competitive advantage of international remote work within a niche, innovative sector. Roles of this nature, especially those requiring specific WordPress architecture expertise, generally sit within the mid-to-senior salary bracket in the local market. Working for a global experiential education company often provides a unique path for growth, as you are likely to be exposed to high-traffic, brand-sensitive projects that look excellent on a portfolio. Ensure your application emphasizes your ability to build "from scratch," as this demonstrates the technical maturity required for this particular team structure.
