Job Description
This role offers a unique opportunity within Liberty's Investment Banking division, focusing on supporting syndicated debt products across various product houses. The core mission is to contribute to business expansion by originating mandates within the countries where Liberty operates. You'll be instrumental in managing a diverse range of debt products, including corporate loans, acquisition and leveraged financing, project financing, reserve-based lending, property financing, preference share financing, share-covered financings, and subordinated debt.
About the role
As an Investment Banking Associate in Agency Front Office, your responsibilities will be multifaceted, extending from the initial stages of financial close and CP (Condition Precedent) sign-off through the entire syndicated loan lifecycle. This involves meticulous administration, including facilitating and coordinating cash flows, managing waivers and amendments, overseeing events of default, assisting with restructurings, coordinating sell-downs, and diligently monitoring covenants.
A critical aspect of this position is adherence to stringent internal policies and procedures, as well as compliance with regulatory bodies. This ensures that all transactions and documentation meet the highest standards, executed in a controlled and consistent manner to mitigate financial, reputational, and operational risks. You will be a central communication hub, fostering effective relationships and seamless information sharing among a broad spectrum of transaction stakeholders. This includes internal teams such as Investment Banking Debt Structuring, Loans Administration, Distribution, and Credit, as well as external parties like Borrowers, Sponsors, Guarantors, Legal Counsel, Lenders' Technical Advisors, Owners' Engineers, Auditors, Compliance, and Global Markets Trading desks.
Furthermore, you will be responsible for reviewing legal documentation, collaborating with internal or external legal counsel to effectively manage legal and operational risk associated with agency functions. Ensuring all documentation aligns with Loan Market Association (LMA) standards is paramount. Coordination and facilitation of security enforcement are also key, involving receipt and accurate processing of security documents, managing lender instructions for security tracking and release, and communicating any potential operational impacts to relevant stakeholders.

Candidates should possess a minimum of three to four years of practical experience, ideally with a legal background that demonstrates a solid understanding and interpretation of legal agreements.
Crucially, you will need a similar tenure of demonstrated experience working within Investment Banking, coupled with a comprehensive knowledge of the product services and offerings available in this sector. The ability to cultivate and maintain effective networks, communicating adeptly with key stakeholders to facilitate transactions, is vital.
Technical competencies that will set you apart include:

- **Deal Appraisal:** The capacity to conduct thorough due diligence on individual transactions, including industry analysis, company evaluation, cash-flow assessment, and growth prospect analysis.
- **Local Market Knowledge:** A deep understanding of the opportunities, competitive dynamics, regulations, and risks inherent in the South African financial market.
- **Risk Awareness and Identification:** A general awareness of risk management practices within financial services, including the ability to identify essential risk elements such as assets, threats, vulnerabilities, and safeguards.
Additional desirable experience includes:
- Experience in understanding and interpreting local and global debt products and solutions to present innovative client offerings.
- Proven ability to coordinate and liaise effectively with professionals, clients, and stakeholders across different business lines.
- Proficiency in building complex financial models, conducting research, and analysing data to produce insightful reports.
- Familiarity with the debt solutions deal process.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple concurrent work streams, and drive multiple deals to completion with minimal supervision.
- Experience working with and interpreting relevant regulatory frameworks.
- A background in Credit Risk or a related field would be advantageous.
