Job Description

This job posting is for a Senior Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer position, specifically focused on the mining process plant sector. The role is based in Sandton, Johannesburg, and requires a professional engineer (PrEng) or professional technologist (Pr.Tech) qualification.

About the Role

The employer, an established entity in the engineering consulting space, is seeking a seasoned professional to join their team. This senior-level position plays a crucial part in the successful execution of Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects within the mining industry. You will be instrumental in ensuring that the electrical and instrumentation aspects of these complex projects are designed, implemented, and commissioned to the highest standards, meeting both client specifications and regulatory requirements. This is an opportunity to contribute to significant mining infrastructure developments and work within a professional, results-oriented environment.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer, your responsibilities will encompass a broad spectrum of activities critical to the lifecycle of mining process plant projects. You can expect to be involved in:

  • **Design and Development:** Leading the conceptualisation, design, and detailed engineering of electrical and instrumentation systems for mining process plants. This includes power distribution, motor control centres, control systems (PLC/SCADA), field instrumentation, and safety systems.
  • **Project Management Support:** Collaborating closely with project managers and other engineering disciplines (mechanical, civil, process) to ensure seamless integration of electrical and instrumentation elements within the overall project scope.
  • **Procurement and Specification:** Developing technical specifications for electrical and instrumentation equipment and services. You will also be involved in the technical evaluation of vendor proposals and assisting with procurement activities.
  • **Construction and Commissioning:** Providing technical guidance and oversight during the construction and installation phases. This includes reviewing contractor submittals, resolving site queries, and actively participating in the commissioning and start-up of plant systems.
  • **Quality Assurance:** Ensuring that all design and executed work adheres to relevant industry standards, codes, and best practices, as well as company and client quality requirements.
  • **Risk Management:** Identifying potential electrical and instrumentation-related risks throughout the project lifecycle and developing mitigation strategies.
  • **Client Liaison:** Engaging with clients and stakeholders to present design solutions, discuss project progress, and address technical queries.
  • **Mentorship:** Potentially guiding and mentoring junior engineers and technicians within the team.

What They're Looking For

The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in electrical and instrumentation engineering, with specific experience in the mining sector and EPC project environments. Essential requirements include:

  • **Professional Registration:** A valid PrEng or Pr.Tech registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is mandatory for this role.
  • **Educational Background:** A relevant Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a National Higher Diploma/BTech in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • **Experience:** Significant, proven experience as an Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer, with a substantial portion of this gained within the mining industry, particularly on process plant projects. Experience with EPC project execution is highly desirable.
  • **Technical Expertise:** A deep understanding of electrical systems design, power distribution, hazardous area classifications, industrial instrumentation, control system architectures (PLC, SCADA, DCS), and associated software.
  • **Software Proficiency:** Familiarity with relevant engineering design software (e.g., CAD, ETAP, electrical design packages) and project management tools.
  • **Problem-Solving:** Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex technical issues and develop effective solutions.
  • **Communication Skills:** Strong written and verbal communication abilities, enabling clear and concise interaction with colleagues, clients, and suppliers.
  • **Teamwork:** A collaborative approach to working within multidisciplinary project teams.

This role offers the chance to work on impactful projects within South Africa's vital mining sector. In the South African context, senior electrical and instrumentation engineers with EPC mining experience are highly sought after. Remuneration typically reflects the extensive experience and specialised knowledge required, with potential for strong career progression within established engineering consultancies and mining houses.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Software Engineer.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or C#.
  • Experience with web frameworks and APIs.
  • Familiarity with database systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
