Job Description
About the Role
Liberty, a prominent financial services group in South Africa, is seeking a dedicated and innovative Senior Engineer to join its Risk Transformation Office. This crucial role centres on enhancing the organisation's solutions lifecycle by designing and implementing custom applications, streamlining manual processes through automation, and developing insightful dashboards for monitoring. You'll be instrumental in driving efficiency and transparency across the company. The ideal candidate is a technically adept and forward-thinking professional eager to build tools that directly impact how work is done and value is delivered.
Key Responsibilities
In this dynamic position, you will collaborate closely with delivery, risk operations, and strategy teams. Your primary objective will be to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies within existing processes and then engineer practical, technology-driven solutions. This involves:
- **Bespoke Application Development:** Designing, building, and deploying unique applications tailored to meet specific organisational needs within the risk domain.
- **Workflow Automation:** Identifying manual, repetitive tasks and developing automated solutions to significantly reduce human effort, minimise errors, and speed up execution.
- **Insightful Dashboard Creation:** Developing and maintaining sophisticated monitoring dashboards using modern business intelligence and data visualisation tools. These dashboards will provide critical insights into operational performance and risk metrics.
- **Cross-functional Collaboration:** Working directly with various teams to understand their challenges, gather requirements, and co-create solutions that foster a more agile, efficient, and transparent operational environment.
- **Innovation and Improvement:** Continuously seeking opportunities to enhance existing systems, improve processes, and introduce new technological capabilities that drive the organisation forward.
What They're Looking For
To excel in this role, you should possess a strong foundation in software engineering coupled with a passion for process improvement and automation. The essential qualifications and experience include:
- **Educational Background:** A completed Matric certificate is required, along with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related technical discipline.
- **Professional Experience:** A minimum of 3-5 years of practical experience in a role such as Software Developer, BI Developer, or Process Automation Engineer.
- **Programming Proficiency:** Demonstrable strong programming skills in at least one major language, such as Python or JavaScript.
- **Data Expertise:** Deep expertise in SQL is essential for effectively querying and manipulating complex datasets from various sources.
- **BI and Visualisation Skills:** Proven experience in building insightful and high-performing dashboards using contemporary BI and data visualisation platforms like Power BI or Tableau.
- **API Integration:** Experience working with APIs, including REST and GraphQL, to facilitate seamless integration between different systems.
You will also need to exhibit strong behavioural competencies such as adopting practical approaches, articulating information clearly, demonstrating developing expertise, embracing change, and interpreting data effectively. A solid understanding of technical competencies including Agile Engineering, API Engineering, Automation, Cloud Computing, Data Engineering, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Microservices, Observability, Platform Engineering, Software Engineering Methods, System Integration, and Test-driven Design (TDD) will be highly advantageous.
This role is an excellent opportunity for a skilled engineer to make a tangible impact within a leading financial institution. Roles of this nature in South Africa often involve working within large corporate environments, particularly in the financial services sector. While salaries vary widely based on experience and the specific company, senior engineering positions commanding R50,000 to R80,000+ per month are not uncommon. Career progression often leads to technical lead roles, architecture positions, or management opportunities within specialised engineering teams.
