Job Description

Cultivating Wealth and Relationships in Private Banking

A prominent financial institution, Liberty, is seeking to appoint a dedicated Private Banking Relationship Banker in its Cape Town offices. This role is centred on fostering deep, enduring relationships with high-net-worth individuals, leveraging a comprehensive understanding of their financial aspirations to deliver bespoke banking and investment solutions. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in not only nurturing existing client portfolios but also in strategically expanding the bank's client base within the affluent segment.

The Core of the Role: Client-Centric Value Delivery

At its heart, this position is about proactive and meaningful client engagement. You will be instrumental in building and maintaining strong connections with private banking clients, ensuring their evolving financial needs are understood and met with precision. This involves a multifaceted approach: driving growth through client retention, identifying and capitalising on cross-selling opportunities, and consistently delivering exceptional service. A key aspect of the role is understanding the intricate financial landscapes of clients and recommending appropriate banking, lending, wealth management, and digital solutions tailored to their specific circumstances.

Furthermore, the role demands meticulous attention to detail in supporting the credit application process, including conducting annual credit reviews and ensuring effective administration of client portfolios. Managing client queries and complaints efficiently, alongside promoting digital adoption and adhering strictly to risk and compliance standards, are also integral responsibilities. This position offers a unique opportunity to work within a dynamic environment where client satisfaction and sustainable profitability are paramount.

What You'll Bring to the Team: Experience and Expertise

To excel in this role, candidates will need to possess a minimum of two to four years of relevant banking experience. Prior exposure to serving affluent clients, private banking operations, or managing relationships within a dedicated client management framework is essential. A proven track record in sales, client service, and relationship management within the financial services sector is highly valued. Experience in handling credit applications, developing financial solutions, and a solid understanding of client portfolio management – encompassing need identification, solution recommendation, and retention strategies – will be critical.

While not strictly mandatory, experience in lending, navigating credit processes, performing financial analysis, and conducting client reviews will be considered advantageous. The ability to proactively identify sales opportunities and deliver solutions that benefit both the client and the organisation is a cornerstone of this position.

Academically, a Bachelor of Commerce, Advanced Diploma, or an equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification in Finance, Business Commerce, Accounting, or a closely related field is required. Crucially, this qualification must be recognised or aligned with the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act, and the incumbent must meet all 'Fit and Proper' requirements as stipulated by regulatory bodies.

Beyond technical proficiencies, strong behavioural competencies are key. These include the ability to establish rapport, understand and interact effectively with diverse individuals, articulate information clearly, and convey confidence. You should demonstrate a capacity for analytical thinking, interpreting data, making sound decisions, and acting decisively while maintaining a proactive and goal-oriented approach. Essential technical skills encompass a thorough understanding of banking processes and procedures, deep customer insight, comprehensive product knowledge, and strong financial and commercial acumen, coupled with the ability to identify and report on risks.

In South Africa, roles in private banking typically offer competitive remuneration packages, reflecting the specialized skills and client base managed. Employers often include the major banking groups and dedicated wealth management firms. Career progression can lead to more senior relationship management roles, team leadership, or specialisation in areas like investment management or estate planning.
