Job Description

Netcare is seeking dedicated Enrolled Nurses to join the team at Akeso Gqeberha. This is an opportunity to contribute to a healthcare organisation focused on providing safe and exceptional patient care, guided by core values of care, truth, participation, compassion, and dignity. If you are passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and upholding high nursing standards, this role could be an ideal fit for you.

About the Role

As an Enrolled Nurse (EN) at Akeso, you will play a crucial part in the delivery of both direct and indirect nursing care to patients. Your work will be conducted under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), and you may either lead a shift or provide essential support to the RN. The core responsibility of the EN is to ensure that every patient receives care with dignity and respect, in an environment that prioritises their safety and individual needs. This involves contributing to high-quality mental and physical healthcare within the Akeso Clinics. You are expected to embody a high standard of nursing practice through your knowledge and skills, serving as a role model for others. While this description outlines primary duties, you may be called upon to undertake additional tasks as required.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will encompass a range of essential nursing and administrative functions. You will report to the RN, and in their absence, to the Nursing Unit Manager (NUM), and ultimately to the Nursing Services Manager (NSM). Collaboration with fellow nursing colleagues and the broader Akeso Clinic Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), administrative staff, and hospital management is key.

Key areas of focus include:

  • **Patient Care:** Participating in the assessment, care, and meeting of patient needs, and contributing to the development, implementation, and evaluation of care programmes. You will practise within your scope of practice, taking full responsibility for your assigned activities and contributing to the holistic well-being of patients. This includes promoting overall health, practising infection prevention and standard precautions, and ensuring effective communication with patients regarding their care. You'll also foster positive relations with patients, relatives, and visitors.
  • **Administration and Governance:** Ensuring all patient documentation is accurate and up-to-date. This includes managing stock, assisting with patient file compilation, and ensuring proper handover procedures are followed at the start and during shifts. You will also be responsible for the task allocation of Enrolled Nurse Auxiliaries (ENAs) and Health Care Workers (HCWs). Maintaining a therapeutic, clean, and safe environment, free from medico-legal risks, is paramount. You'll adhere to Netcare's waste management principles and relevant occupational safety acts, reporting any identified risks or equipment needing repair. Professional conduct, patient confidentiality, and adherence to hospital policies are expected at all times.
  • **Teamwork and Meetings:** You are expected to work cooperatively with all members of the nursing team and the MDT. You will also attend delegated meetings, such as ward rounds, management meetings, and committee meetings (e.g., Health and Safety, Infection Control, Risk Management). Active participation in these meetings, including offering suggestions and contributing to problem-solving, is encouraged. Feedback from meetings should be communicated to the nursing team.
  • **Resource Management:** While not directly involved in financial management, you will exercise prudence in the supervision of human resources, encouraging good attendance and judicious use of sick leave among subordinates. You will also be responsible for the prudent utilisation and control of material resources, including medication and consumables, ensuring accurate billing and reporting of equipment needing repair.

What They're Looking For

To excel in this role, you will need to demonstrate a commitment to professional nursing practice and patient-centred care. Key requirements include:

  • A recognised nursing qualification as an Enrolled Nurse.
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • Previous experience in a hospital or clinic setting, preferably within mental healthcare, would be advantageous.
  • A thorough understanding of nursing principles, patient assessment, and care planning.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management abilities, with the capacity to prioritise tasks.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate documentation and adhering to administrative procedures.
  • A commitment to upholding ethical standards, patient confidentiality, and safety protocols.
  • The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and manage workload effectively, including the delegation of tasks when appropriate.

In South Africa, Enrolled Nurses play a vital role across various healthcare settings, including private hospitals, public facilities, and specialised clinics. Salaries for Enrolled Nurses can vary widely based on experience, location, and the specific employer, but typically fall within a competitive range for healthcare professionals. This position at Akeso Gqeberha offers a platform for professional growth within the Netcare group, a prominent healthcare provider in the country.
