Job Description

NOPE is an organisation at the forefront of AI safety, but with a distinctly different focus from mainstream concerns. Instead of delving into the more commonly discussed risks like cyber threats or hypothetical alignment failures often depicted in popular culture, NOPE is dedicated to exploring the profound and rapidly evolving landscape of human-AI relationships. The company is driven by a mission to understand and address the societal and personal impacts of these increasingly intertwined connections, acknowledging that its purpose is fluid and adaptable, seeking individuals who are motivated to help shape its direction.

About the Social Comms Role

This position is an exciting opportunity to significantly amplify NOPE's presence across social media platforms and to foster a more dynamic engagement with the global discourse on AI safety. The core of this role involves transforming complex research and findings into accessible, engaging content that resonates with a broad audience. You will be instrumental in crafting NOPE's online persona, ensuring it is both consistent and credible as it participates in crucial conversations.

This role requires a strategic thinker who can identify key pieces of work and research that lend themselves to social media dissemination. The aim is to build a recognisable and authoritative voice for NOPE online, moving beyond simple broadcasting to active participation and dialogue.

Key Responsibilities

The Social Comms role is multifaceted, encompassing content creation, community engagement, and strategic planning for NOPE's social channels. Your responsibilities will include:

  • **Content Strategy and Execution:** Developing and implementing a social media content calendar, deciding what research and insights are best suited for public sharing on various platforms.
  • **Content Creation:** Crafting compelling, human-centric posts, threads, and articles based on NOPE's research and findings, ensuring that complex ideas are communicated clearly and engagingly.
  • **Community Engagement:** Actively interacting with a diverse range of stakeholders, including AI researchers, journalists, developers, and policymakers, fostering meaningful connections and discussions.
  • **Brand Building:** Cultivating a consistent, authoritative, and approachable online presence for NOPE across all relevant social media accounts.
  • **Platform Contribution:** Contributing original content to NOPE's blog, LinkedIn profile, and other designated social media platforms.

What They're Looking For

NOPE is seeking an individual with a deep curiosity about the intricate ways AI is shaping human interactions and social structures. A foundational understanding of Large Language Models (LLMs) and an awareness of their limitations are essential. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully managing or growing popular social media accounts, demonstrating an ability to connect with audiences and build a community.

Furthermore, NOPE values candidates who possess a strong aptitude for writing engaging, relatable content that prioritises the human element. Experience within domains such as civic engagement, public service, policy development, trust and safety initiatives, or non-profit organisations would be highly beneficial, as it indicates an understanding of the nuances involved in public-facing communication on sensitive topics.

In South Africa, roles focused on social media communication and content creation can vary significantly in remuneration depending on the organisation's size, sector, and the candidate's experience. Entry-level positions might start around R15,000 to R25,000 per month, while more senior or specialised roles, especially those requiring strategic input and deep technical understanding, could command R30,000 to R50,000 or more. Employers range from tech startups and established corporations to non-governmental organisations and government departments, all increasingly recognising the importance of strategic online communication. Career progression often involves moving into digital marketing management, communications leadership, or specialised roles in areas like digital strategy or online community management.

Requirements

  • Deep concern and curiosity about the impact of AI on human relationships and social norms.
  • Understanding of LLMs and their flaws.
  • Experience running or growing popular social accounts.
  • Ability to write engaging, human-centric content.
  • Experience in civic domains, public good, policy, trust and safety, or non-profits.
