Job Description
The Interaction Design Foundation (IxDF), a globally recognised leader in online design and AI education, is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Course Director to shape the future of its curriculum. With over a decade of hands-on design experience and a deep understanding of timeless human-centred design principles, you will play a pivotal role in guiding the learning journey for hundreds of thousands of aspiring and established designers worldwide. This remote opportunity is ideal for an individual who can anticipate the evolving landscape of design, distinguishing between transient tool-based skills and enduring conceptual expertise.
You possess an innate understanding of what constitutes exceptional design education. You can identify the preeminent voices in the field and articulate their unique contributions and potential areas for development. This role offers the chance to translate that insight into tangible learning experiences, ensuring that IxDF's courses remain at the forefront of design pedagogy.
About the Role
As a Course Director, you will be an integral member of the IxDF's Editorial Team. Your primary responsibility will be to research, develop, and oversee the creation of unique and impactful course materials. This involves not only crafting compelling content but also identifying and recruiting leading industry professionals to share their expertise as instructors. You will have a significant say in determining the content direction and ensuring that all courses meet the highest standards of quality and relevance.
Your work will involve a close collaboration with both internal UX and UI designers and external industry leaders. The goal is to create learning sequences that are not only informative but also engaging and practical, equipping learners with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing technological environment. A key aspect of this role is understanding how emerging technologies like AI will reshape design practices and ensuring that the curriculum reflects this evolution.
Key Responsibilities
The Course Director will be entrusted with a range of critical responsibilities, including:
- **Curriculum Development:** Researching emerging trends and identifying knowledge gaps in the design and AI education space to inform new course development.
- **Content Creation:** Assisting in the creation of original, high-quality course materials that are both insightful and actionable for learners.
- **Instructor Recruitment:** Identifying and engaging with respected industry leaders and practitioners to serve as instructors for IxDF courses.
- **Quality Assurance:** Ensuring that all course content adheres to IxDF's rigorous quality standards and pedagogical best practices.
- **Editorial Oversight:** Providing guidance and feedback throughout the course development process, from initial concept to final delivery.
- **Strategic Input:** Contributing to the overall editorial strategy of the Interaction Design Foundation, helping to shape its long-term educational vision.
- **Collaboration:** Working effectively with a diverse team of designers, educators, and industry professionals to achieve shared goals.
What They're Looking For
To excel in this role, candidates should possess a comprehensive set of skills and experiences. A minimum of ten years of hands-on design experience is essential, demonstrating a deep practical understanding of the field. Crucially, you should have an established network of respected designers and thought leaders within the industry.
Beyond technical expertise, strong social intelligence and empathy are vital. This will enable you to understand the needs of learners and collaborate effectively with instructors. The ability to conceptualise and develop step-by-step learning sequences that facilitate effective knowledge transfer is paramount. A genuine desire to make a positive impact on the global design community is also a key attribute. Finally, fluency in both written and spoken English is required for effective communication and content development.
This position offers a unique opportunity to influence the learning of a vast global community of designers. For professionals in South Africa looking to transition into an educational leadership role, this is a significant step. While specific salaries for such niche, high-level remote positions are variable, a role of this magnitude, requiring extensive experience and industry influence, typically commands a competitive remuneration package. The Interaction Design Foundation's reach means you’ll be working with a diverse international cohort, a valuable experience for any professional looking to broaden their horizons.

- A network among respected designers.
- Strong social intelligence and empathy.
- Ability to create step-by-step learning sequences.
