About the Opportunity

OUTsurance, a prominent player in the South African insurance landscape for nearly three decades, is seeking a dedicated Data Scientist/Actuarial Analyst to join their vibrant team in Centurion. This role presents a compelling chance to immerse yourself in the heart of data-driven strategy, working alongside operational management and various business stakeholders. You'll play a crucial role in translating complex data into actionable insights that fuel informed decision-making and underpin the successful delivery of key strategic initiatives.

If you're passionate about leveraging data to drive tangible improvements in operational performance, contribute to achieving world-class cost efficiencies, and maximise profitable premium growth, this position offers a stimulating environment to apply your skills and make a significant impact. You will become an integral part of a dynamic analytics team, contributing to high-stakes projects that shape the future of the business.

Key Responsibilities

In this multifaceted role, your primary objective will be to connect people, processes, and systems to deliver exceptional value to staff, clients, shareholders, and suppliers. This involves fostering strong relationships and adeptly navigating a diverse range of stakeholders, including IT, Digital, Actuarial, and Operations teams, to achieve critical business outcomes.

You will utilise a robust analytics toolset to achieve these goals, which may include:

  • Developing and maintaining analytics reports and cubes.
  • Building and optimising work allocation models.
  • Contributing to performance-related frameworks, such as PBS and Manager Bonus structures, and salary analyses.
  • Generating accurate staff projections.
  • Conducting in-depth data analysis across the value chain to identify areas for improvement and innovation.
  • Translating analytical findings into clear, meaningful insights and practical recommendations for key decision-makers.
  • Building, maintaining, and continuously improving predictive models to support evolving business objectives.
  • Actively participating in strategic projects designed to enhance operational efficiency and positively influence customer outcomes.

What They're Looking For

The ideal candidate is someone with a sharp analytical mind, an inherent curiosity, and a genuine enthusiasm for using data as a tool to solve complex business challenges. You should be comfortable not only constructing analytical solutions but also engaging effectively with stakeholders across different business units to drive meaningful and impactful business results.

While not strictly mandatory, a background in Actuarial Science, Data Science, or Mathematical Statistics would be highly beneficial. Furthermore, candidates who have completed the CT Series of actuarial board exams and possess two or more years of experience in data analytics will be at an advantage.

Essential technical skills include strong proficiency in SQL and Excel. The ability to build analytical solutions and present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences is paramount.

They are committed to equal opportunities and encourage applications from individuals with disabilities and those from designated groups who meet the role requirements, in line with their Employment Equity objectives. This is an opportunity to grow your career within a dynamic and innovative organisation that blends cutting-edge digital solutions with deeply ingrained human values.

Requirements

  • Actuarial science, Data science or Mathematical Statistics degree
  • Completion of CT Series of actuarial board exams (advantageous)
  • 2+ years of Data analytics work experience (advantageous)
  • Strong SQL and Excel skills
