Job Description

Weekday AI is on the frontier of integrating artificial intelligence with the intricate world of law. They are assembling a team of seasoned legal professionals to lend their invaluable real-world experience to the development of advanced AI systems. The goal is to significantly enhance how these AI platforms comprehend, interpret, and reason about complex legal principles, ultimately leading to more accurate and reliable legal technology solutions. This initiative is for legal experts who are keen to apply their practical knowledge to a forward-thinking technological project.

The Role's Focus

At its core, this position involves a critical review and evaluation of AI-generated legal content. This means you'll be scrutinising written materials and responses produced by AI, assessing them for their accuracy, thoroughness, and overall quality against established legal benchmarks. Your role extends beyond mere identification of errors; you will be a key contributor in shaping the AI's understanding. This involves answering specific legal questions posed by the AI development team and providing detailed, well-reasoned feedback grounded in your professional expertise and hands-on legal practice.

Furthermore, you will be instrumental in guiding the AI's research capabilities. This includes identifying and recommending authoritative legal references, crucial research materials, and other pertinent resources that align with your specific areas of legal practice. A significant aspect of the role is sharing your deep insights into the practicalities of legal workflows, the professional standards that govern legal work, effective research methodologies, and the day-to-day realities of practicing law. This knowledge transfer is vital for ensuring the AI’s outputs reflect genuine legal practice.

You will also collaborate closely with a diverse group of subject matter experts, all working towards a common objective: to elevate the performance of AI across a broad spectrum of legal domains. Your contributions will directly help ensure that the legal outputs generated by these AI systems are not only technically sound but also adhere to professional standards, demonstrate robust legal reasoning, and are practically applicable in real-world legal scenarios.

What They're Looking For

Weekday AI is seeking legal professionals with at least two years of comprehensive professional experience. Ideally, candidates will have experience across a variety of legal practice areas. This could include, but is not limited to, expertise in contract law, litigation, corporate law, intellectual property, or regulatory and compliance matters.

A strong command of legal research is essential. This means you should be proficient in utilising standard legal resources, including databases for case law, statutory and regulatory texts, and legal treatises. Your ability to navigate these resources effectively will be key to evaluating the AI's understanding and directing its research efforts.

Excellent written communication skills are paramount. The ability to articulate complex legal concepts with clarity, precision, and accuracy is fundamental to providing constructive feedback and contributing to the development of AI explanations. Prior experience in creating legal content, such as drafting briefs, legal memoranda, opinions, or continuing legal education (CLE) materials, would be a significant advantage.

Familiarity with AI-powered tools, such as ChatGPT or similar platforms, is highly desirable, indicating an openness to and understanding of the technology you will be helping to refine. Professional proficiency in English is required, and you must be able to commit approximately 10 hours per week to this role on a consistent basis.

This opportunity offers legal professionals the chance to engage with cutting-edge AI technology, leveraging their existing skills to shape the future of legal tech. Roles requiring this level of expertise in South Africa can vary significantly in remuneration, but often command competitive rates, particularly for specialists. Such positions are typically found within legal tech companies, innovation departments of larger law firms, or dedicated AI research organisations. The career path can lead to specialised roles in AI ethics, legal data science, or AI product management within the legal sector.
