Job Description

This role is for a Specialist within Regulatory Risk Oversight & Advisory, based in Johannesburg. The primary objective is to contribute to and uphold the Group Financial Crime Compliance Regulatory Risk Oversight, Advisory, and Training Framework. A crucial part of this function involves implementing this framework across various countries and jurisdictions. The goal is to ensure that business operations are conducted in full compliance with regulations, thereby safeguarding the organisation from potential operational losses, fines, penalties, and reputational damage. This proactive approach not only mitigates risk but also serves to enhance the organisation's competitive standing.

About the Role

The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and maintaining a robust framework designed to manage regulatory risks associated with financial crime. This involves not only understanding the intricacies of existing regulations but also anticipating future changes and their potential impact on the business. A significant aspect of the position is the practical application of this framework, ensuring its effective integration into the daily operations of business units across different geographical locations. This requires a deep understanding of both local and international regulatory landscapes, particularly concerning financial crime.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to the strategic development and ongoing refinement of the Group's Financial Crime Compliance Regulatory Risk Oversight, Advisory, and Training Framework.
  • Implementing and embedding this framework across designated countries and jurisdictions, ensuring consistency and effectiveness.
  • Providing expert advice and guidance to business units on regulatory compliance matters related to financial crime.
  • Monitoring adherence to policies and procedures, identifying gaps, and recommending corrective actions.
  • Assisting in the development and delivery of training programmes to enhance compliance awareness and capabilities across the organisation.
  • Supporting the identification and assessment of regulatory risks, contributing to mitigation strategies.
  • Ensuring that business activities are conducted in a compliant manner to prevent financial losses and protect the organisation's reputation.
  • Staying abreast of evolving legislative and regulatory requirements impacting financial institutions, particularly concerning anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorism (AML/CFT).

What They're Looking For

To excel in this role, you will need:

  • A degree in Risk Management, Business Commerce, Law, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3-4 years of experience within Group Anti Financial Crime Compliance.
  • Extensive experience in drafting and monitoring AML/CFT policies.
  • Proven experience in an AML/CFT advisory capacity.
  • A solid understanding of the financial sector environment and its operational procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements pertinent to financial institutions.
  • Familiarity with internal compliance policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated behavioural competencies such as articulation, attention to detail, influencing skills, documentation, idea generation, interpersonal skills, decision-making, time management, insightfulness, teamwork, and a positive outlook.
  • Strong technical competencies including compliance within the financial industry, understanding regulatory frameworks, legal compliance, policy development, promoting good governance, risk and control management, and strategic planning and reporting.

This is a critical role within a large financial services group. Professionals in similar regulatory risk oversight and advisory positions in South Africa often find pathways into senior compliance management or broader risk governance roles. While specific remuneration varies significantly based on experience and the precise scope of duties, such specialist roles typically command competitive salaries reflective of the niche expertise and responsibility involved.
