Job Description

About the Role

Ozow, a prominent fintech innovator in South Africa, is extending an invitation to aspiring software developers to join their dynamic team in Cape Town. This Junior Software Developer position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and enhancement of cutting-edge digital payment platforms. The role is particularly geared towards individuals eager to immerse themselves in an environment where Artificial Intelligence is not just a buzzword, but an integral tool from day one. You will be part of a significant undertaking to modernise and replatform existing systems, gaining invaluable experience alongside seasoned engineers. This is a chance to learn the discipline of applying AI tools effectively, ensuring code quality, care, and a deep understanding of the software you ship.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will be multifaceted, contributing to the entire software development lifecycle within a collaborative, cross-functional setting. A core aspect of this role involves actively participating in the replatforming of existing systems onto modern, AI-native architectures. Under the guidance of senior developers, you will help migrate well-defined functionalities, gaining hands-on experience with complex system overhauls.

A key focus will be on building features that integrate with Large Language Models (LLMs). This will involve learning and applying techniques such as context management, embeddings, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to create intelligent and responsive applications. You will be expected to write clean, efficient, and maintainable code, adhering to established coding standards. The role encourages the use of AI coding tools to accelerate development, but with a strong emphasis on understanding, verifying, and being able to explain every line of code committed.

Safety and data integrity are paramount in the fintech space. Therefore, you will follow strict guidelines for the safe use of AI across the development process, including diligent checking of AI-generated output and the protection of sensitive payment data. Troubleshooting and bug fixing will also be a part of your daily tasks, with an expectation to escalate issues early when challenges arise. Learning how systems are designed for scalability, security, and performance will be essential, and you'll apply these principles to the features you develop. Engagement in code reviews, both providing and receiving feedback, will foster a deeper understanding of the codebase and best practices. Furthermore, you'll contribute to writing unit tests for your code and assist in end-to-end testing, including for AI features where outputs can be variable. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerisation, and cloud environments (AWS or Azure) will be developed as you learn to deploy code safely to production. Working within an Agile framework, you'll participate in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives. Finally, you will contribute to creating and maintaining essential technical documentation.

What They're Looking For

Ozow is seeking candidates with a solid foundation and a proactive approach to learning. Ideally, you will have around two years of experience in a Software Engineer or Developer role, which could include internships or formal graduate programmes. A relevant tertiary qualification, such as an IT Diploma or Degree, or equivalent practical experience gained through a recognised coding bootcamp, is a prerequisite.

Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages is essential: .NET C#, Python, or JavaScript/ReactJs. Having experience with more than one will be considered a distinct advantage. A demonstrable and thoughtful engagement with AI coding tools is crucial, along with the ability to critically assess and explain the code these tools generate. Prior exposure to building applications with LLMs, whether through personal projects, university coursework, or previous work experience, would be highly beneficial.

A good understanding of database concepts and SQL, proficiency with version control systems like Git, and a general grasp of how the web functions are necessary. Beyond technical skills, Ozow values a curious and pragmatic mindset towards AI, coupled with a strong and demonstrable willingness to learn and adapt. The ability to work effectively in a team, communicate technical concepts clearly, and contribute positively to a fast-paced development environment are also key attributes.

In the South African context, junior software developer roles, especially those involving modern technologies and AI integration, can offer competitive starting salaries. Entry-level positions often range from R20,000 to R35,000 per month, depending on qualifications, specific skill set, and the company's location and size. Ozow, as a leading fintech player, is likely to offer opportunities for growth within a rapidly evolving industry. Developers in this field can progress to mid-level and senior roles, specialising in areas like AI/ML engineering, backend development, or platform architecture. The fintech sector in South Africa is dynamic, with established banks, emerging startups, and payment processors like Ozow constantly seeking skilled talent.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience as a Software Engineer or Developer, including internships or graduate programmes.
  • An IT Diploma or Degree, or equivalent practical experience such as a recognised coding bootcamp.
  • Working knowledge of at least one of .NET C#, Python or JavaScript/ReactJs (more is a bonus).
  • Regular, thoughtful use of AI coding tools, with the ability to explain and check the code they produce.
  • Exposure to building with LLMs, for example through personal, university or work projects, beneficial.
  • A good grasp of databases and SQL, version control (Git) and how the web works.
  • A curious, pragmatic attitude towards AI and a strong willingness to learn.
