Job Description

Fluence International is seeking a pragmatic and security-conscious Full-Stack Developer to join their team. This organisation focuses on evidence-based education and training for professionals and institutions navigating the emerging field of psychedelic-assisted therapy. As they look to scale their B2B product offerings, they require an engineer who can balance high-level technical architecture with the rigorous privacy and safety standards required in mental healthcare.

About the role

In this position, you will be reporting directly to the Senior AI & Design Lead. Your primary objective will be to translate complex product requirements into stable, secure, and well-documented applications. Because the company operates within a sensitive sector, you will be expected to maintain a sharp focus on auditability, data privacy, and clinical regulatory standards.

The role offers significant autonomy. You will be responsible for owning features from conception to deployment, ensuring that the code you ship is production-quality and easily maintainable. Since the company operates as a globally distributed team, successful candidates must excel at asynchronous communication and demonstrate a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities

Your daily responsibilities will revolve around building out the organisation’s B2B ecosystem. You will be involved in the following key areas:

  • **Application Development:** Building and maintaining robust full-stack applications, primarily utilising the React and Next.js framework.
  • **Infrastructure Management:** Architecting performant backends and APIs, with extensive reliance on AWS services such as Lambda, ECS/Fargate, RDS, and Cognito.
  • **Security & Compliance:** Implementing granular role-based access controls and ensuring that all data models adhere to strict privacy and audit requirements.
  • **AI Integration:** Working with LLM features in a production environment, with a particular focus on implementing guardrails and security protocols.
  • **Operations:** Monitoring system performance, implementing logging, and utilising tools like n8n to automate internal workflows.
  • **Collaboration:** Working closely with the senior leadership team to iterate on product briefs and maintain thorough technical documentation.

What they're looking for

Fluence is looking for an experienced developer with at least three years of professional experience. They value technical versatility and a mindset that prioritises system integrity.

  • **Core Tech Stack:** Strong proficiency in TypeScript and JavaScript, with deep experience in React and Next.js.
  • **Cloud Proficiency:** Hands-on experience deploying and managing production-level workloads on AWS.
  • **Industry Knowledge:** A solid grasp of web security best practices is essential. Previous experience in healthcare, education, or other highly regulated industries is considered a strong advantage.
  • **Professional Approach:** Ability to take full ownership of projects, provide clear documentation, and participate in a senior-led, fast-paced environment.
  • **Bonus Skills:** Familiarity with BaaS platforms like Convex and experience in internal process automation.

For South African developers, working for a global entity in the health-tech or education-tech space offers exposure to high-level architecture and compliance-heavy development. Roles of this nature, especially those involving full-stack AWS expertise, are generally well-compensated in the local market, often ranging from R70,000 to R120,000+ per month depending on seniority and the specific currency arrangement. This position is ideal for someone looking to move away from generalist web development toward specialised, impact-driven software engineering in the mental health sector.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a full-stack or frontend-heavy engineer.
  • Strong proficiency in React, Next.js, TypeScript/JavaScript.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS for production workloads.
  • Solid understanding of web security best practices.
  • Experience building systems in or adjacent to healthcare, education, or compliance-heavy environments is a plus.
  • Excellent async communication, code ownership, and ability to work with a small, senior-led team.
  • Comfort working from a clear product brief and also proposing improvements proactively.
  • Familiarity with logging, monitoring, and observability tools.
