Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Section Engineer Rope Shovels. The purpose of this role is to plan and manage engineering and maintenance activities, ensuring they are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Section 2.13.3.1 Legal Appointment.
  • Oversee ‘working elements’ (inspections, audits, PTOs, etc.) of the Safety Management System and comply as appropriate.
  • Ensure that critical controls in your area are functioning.
  • Implement and maintain compliance with Group and Site safety, health and environment standards.
  • Ensure prompt investigation of all injuries, illnesses, and incidents.
  • Ensure that subordinates are competent in the safe facilitation of their tasks.
  • Stop unsafe work in any area – not just in your area. We are safety leaders.
  • Issue safety-related instructions to any employees or contractors at the workplace.
  • Initiate action, including training, against subordinates and contractors for their role in unsafe behaviour.
  • Implement the equipment maintenance strategy to align with the production profile.
  • Enhance engineering discipline by providing quality work and feedback to the maintenance management system.
  • Mitigate production risks by managing them proactively.
  • Ensure quality control/quality assurance during routine, test work, and contractor management.
  • Review progress against the plan and make changes and adjustments accordingly.
  • Assign tasks to subordinates in line with achieving the agreed production plan.
  • Monitor and optimise work schedules.
  • Assign tasks to supervisors to meet the required tasks and reporting.
  • Stop or redirect work not being executed according to quality standards or not being solved by the shift supervisor if needed.
  • Interpret service strategies for managing engineering and maintenance for HME/Plant, aligning them with the overall mine operation goals and objectives.
  • Refine schedules and priorities.
  • Oversee the planning and scheduling of engineering and maintenance activities, including allocating resources, equipment, and personnel.
  • Ensure that plans are comprehensive and efficient.
  • Allocate resources, including skilled personnel, materials, and equipment, to the various engineering and maintenance tasks.
  • Optimise resource allocation to achieve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Manage the budget for all engineering and maintenance activities, monitor expenses, and identify opportunities for cost savings while maintaining the highest safety and performance standards.
  • If external contractors are involved in engineering and maintenance activities, oversee their activities, manage contracts, and ensure that they meet safety, quality, and performance expectations.
  • Manage mining equipment and assets' condition, maintenance, and performance.
  • Ensure maintenance and repair work is conducted according to manufacturer guidelines and industry standards.
  • Maintain a focus on the quality of maintenance and repair work, conducting inspections and audits to ensure that tasks are completed to a high standard.
  • Collect and analyse data on equipment condition, performance, and maintenance activities.
  • Generate reports detailing the status of engineering and maintenance key performance indicators.
  • Communicate with various stakeholders, including senior management, maintenance teams, engineers, and other relevant departments.
  • Provide regular updates on engineering and maintenance progress and address any concerns or issues.
  • Ensure that all activities consider environmental factors and minimise adverse environmental impacts, such as dust control and water management.
  • Ensure all activities comply with relevant mining regulations, permits, and other legal requirements.
  • Seek opportunities for process improvement and optimisation in shutdown procedures and resource utilisation.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure everyone is on the same page by providing information, actively listening and responding to feedback.
  • Establish clear expectations and goals for the team to ensure that everyone is working towards the same objectives and that progress can be measured and tracked over time.
  • When changes to the plan are necessary, handle them in a way that minimises disruption to the team and keeps everyone focused on the end goal.
  • Monitor performance against the plan to ensure progress and any issues or roadblocks are promptly addressed, including identifying areas where improvements can be made and acting to make the necessary changes.
  • Set and enforce rules and standards of behaviour, as well as address any performance or conduct issues that arise.
  • Providing training to team members to ensure that they have the skills and knowledge necessary to perform their roles effectively via on-the-job training, mentoring, or other forms of development.
  • Identify staffing needs and make sure that the right people are in the right roles to support the team's objectives.
  • Manage the talent pool of employees to ensure that the team has the right mix of skills and experience to achieve its goals by identifying high-performing employees and developing plans to retain and promote them, as well as identifying areas where additional skills or experience are needed and taking action to recruit or develop employees with those capabilities.
  • Share information at appropriate forums.
  • Introduce change following business needs.
  • Enforce discipline to ensure conditions conducive to work.
  • Develop or ensure the development of role requirements.
  • Select and appoint staff to the role requirements.

Requirements

  • Relevant Bachelor’s Degree or Relevant Bachelor of Technology on an NQF7-level
  • GCC for Mines
  • SA Drivers Licence Code B
  • 6-8 years of relevant experience in engineering maintenance and planning in a mining/operations environment, including 3 years in a supervisory/management position.
