Your CV is your first impression — make it count. Here are 10 tips specifically tailored for the South African job market.
1. Keep It Concise
South African recruiters typically spend 6-10 seconds scanning a CV. Aim for 2-3 pages maximum. Only include relevant experience and skills.
2. Include Your Personal Details
Unlike some countries, SA CVs should include your full name, contact number, email address, and location (city/province). You don't need to include your ID number or photo unless specifically requested.
3. Write a Strong Personal Profile
Start with a 3-4 sentence summary highlighting your key skills, experience, and career goals. Tailor this for each application.
4. List Experience in Reverse Chronological Order
Start with your most recent position. Include company name, job title, dates, and 3-5 bullet points describing your achievements — not just duties.
5. Quantify Your Achievements
Instead of "Managed a sales team," write "Led a team of 12 sales representatives, increasing quarterly revenue by 25%."
6. Highlight Relevant Skills
Include both technical skills (software, tools, certifications) and soft skills (leadership, communication, problem-solving).
7. Include Your Education
List your qualifications, institution names, and completion dates. If you have a degree, you don't need to list matric details unless you're a recent graduate.
8. Add References
Include at least two professional references with their name, title, company, and contact details. Alternatively, write "References available on request."
9. Proofread Everything
Spelling and grammar errors are an immediate red flag. Have someone else review your CV before sending it.
10. Save as PDF
Always send your CV as a PDF to preserve formatting across different devices and operating systems.
